New fighter, no realm, and (possibly) a new question

Postby Underhill » Wed Feb 22, 2006 7:50 pm

As you can see by the title, I'm new. Also deducible (deductible?), there's no realm in my immediate vicinity. But perhaps I should start with a brief introduction of myself...

I'm fifteen, a proud Texan, and nowhere near a realm, not without driving two hours northwest.

The first problem will solve itself in time, and I've read several threads on fixing the second, which brings us to the question.

Should I earn my knighthood before I start a realm?

Thanks for your help.

BTW, I'll be around Alfhiem in early March and wondering if I could earn my knighthood when I'm in Dallas, and it would help me get to know the community.

i would not worry about knighthood.

for experienced fighters, it can come in time depending on the realm and the desires of those people. it's not something you just go do, especially if you are at all new here.

my advice is that you just get into combat and fight for a few years AT LEAST (going to national events and practicing a lot) before you even consider knighthood.

it's no easy task.

that said, welcome to belegarth. i'll let other people say more... i've not travelled much or been to many large events (just okfest and springwar).

I have started two realms, both have been time and money consuming efforts, and I am just barely starting to squire for an established knight. It is, in my estimation impossible to earn a knighthood without a realm to practice with. Once to start a realm you will also show the second of three precepts that are genarally required before you become a knight. The first is of course skill, but the second is leadership, that might be more important. Starting your own realm will go a long ways towards helping you to gain Knighthood.

To my (another noob's) understanding:

You have to do a lot for your realm/belegarth, knighthood is gained from your selflessness and dedication.

Perks = well they get a dental and two weeks vacation time, there is a casual friday at events where they fight in jeans etc etc...

j/k I don't know of many perks... just responcibilies and the respect

Here is a link to a forum that is currently discussing knighthood and what it takes to become a knight. You would probably be interested.

perks? you get a sir in front of your name. which you could add anyway. BUT, this is one that means something, and which other people will know means something.

people will still respect you for you, not for your title. your title will just reflect that you went through a lot of work, and are likely a decent person.

to paraphrase something vokor quoted within that link up above, knighthood doesn't bring responsibility and leadership, only the opportunity for it.

to further summarize my understanding, i will offer two statements.
I. it is not easy
II. the benefits are on the inside. not in shallow rewards.

So you want to be a Knight? The best thing you can do is go to as many events as you can learn to game, and ask a lot of people to fight. I would also Pm Kyrian and ask him as muck as you can.

Now remember one thing the title "Sir" will not gain you any respect, you must have the respect of the people to gain the title "Sir"

it's not the sir or the title of knight that means anything it's what they've done to achieve it. so the perk is massive respect there are some knights i don't like perssonelly but i have massive respect for what they've done individually and for the game

First, I'd like to thank yall.

magpie: Then I won't worry about it for now, but I will work toward it. I' can also add a bit to the perks...

Par Ohmsford: I'll keep that in mind.

shiv/magpie: Thanks for the link. I see I have a long road ahead of me.

Vokor: Yup. Who's Kyrian? I won't call myself 'sir' until I've earned my spurs.

graavish: I'll try to earn your respect, as well. Through battle

I'll still be in Dallas around March and still want to attend a practice session. Any guidance that will be given I am ready to recieve.

I look forward to meeting yall on the field one day.

Peace be upon all of you.

Also remeber that for each Knight you squire for the right of passage may be different. In the west, Sir Itan had to pass a test at Chaos wars: Fight and defeat every Gelf, Squire, and Knight in THEIR form of combat, but for some other Knights the Trial is just for show. And some Knights have requirements off the feild as well. Sir Michael will NOT Knight his squires until they have at least an associates degree from College.

Me? A sadist? That would imply that I derive pleasure in "inflicting" these tasks on my squires  .

But seriously, my point with all of these tasks is twofold: 1) To give a future knight the experience and knowledge to be able to start his or her own realm. 2) To make sure the squire can assist the realm in any capacity--weapon building, running an event, etc.

Before I spent time in Amtgard, I believed that fighting was the only thing there was. Amtgard opened my eyes to so many other things and the realization that knighthood didn't have to be simply about fighting. It was about excelling in a chosen field whether it was fighting, the arts, service to the group, or in leadership roles. I would use the example of people who get knighted today. It's rare to see anyone knighted today for achievements on the battlefield. It's about being the pinnacle in whatever field you've chosen to dedicate yourself to, be it music, acting, or some other endeavor.

Fighting is just one part of what we do. There are so many other ways to make contributions to Belegarth and I want to impart that perspective on my squires. If you look at the tasks, there are a few involving combat but not as many as you might think. They're about providing a well-rounded education of all the different opportunities available in Belegarth.

Kyrian, you have my admiration. I'll take your tasks over an Associate Degree right now, due to my inability to obtain said degree at this time.

Wife=source of terror incarnate. Got it.

graavish, hmmm.....I'll get back to you on that. But then, it can't be any crazier than a canoeing party...

If this is true, I want to go canoeing with you sometime. The nightlife can get pretty insane at events, but since you're fifteen, you probably don't want to (or shouldn't) get too involved with any of that.

As for Gelfs; when in doubt, consult the Wiki: http://www.geddon.org/index.php/Gelf
If you ask me, they're like an unruly mob without the coordination or effectiveness you'd expect from an unorganized bunch of potato farmers. All in jest. ;)

Don't let my comment discourage you in anyway. Many of us are old enough to legally consume alchohol but that doesn't make it the status quo. No one will force you do anything you don't want to, and it's definitely possible to enjoy an event without ever coming in contact with booze; heck I've been doing it for five years.

Mind you, this is only at national events. I would assume that all groups observe the local laws wherever they choose to practice.
