Archery Question

Postby Razputin » Sun Jun 13, 2010 12:51 am

Hello! I have been playing Belegarth for a while now and I've never quite got into archery. I've always had a passion for it and I'm finally getting to it! I would just like to get some advise for archery. What is the easiest/cheapest way to get a bow? I was thinking about a PVC bow but the Titan bow on 3riversarchery.com looks pretty good too. Also, I will be making my own arrows. So what kind of shaft for the bow should I get? Wood, carbon, or aluminum? Thank you for any creative and helpful tips and advise.

I just bought my bow (a Bear Archery Wizard Bow) at amazon.com and it cost me about 19 bucks after shipping and handling. The bow fits the requirements in BoW and the product information for it from amazon is: Durable composite limbs, 44" overall bow length, 17"–24" draw length, 10-lb to 18-lb draw weight and for left or right hand. I do not know if this is the type of lbs you want. I hope this helps.

No problem... I can't believe I left out the arrow part. I also bought my arrows from amazon. Bear Archery 30-Inch Safetyglass Vaned Arrows (3 Per Retail Card). It took four or five days to get to me and I got a free bow string with them. They cost me around 15 bucks after shipping and handling. They so far work great however, I have not had a chance to complete them because the arrow kits from edhellen have not gotten to me yet. I also found a great way to remove the arrow tips without cutting the shaft. I lit a candle and held the arrow tip above the candle rotating it for 20-30 seconds and then used pliers to remove the arrow tip.

With the 'Bear Archery 30-Inch Safetyglass Vaned Arrows', how many do you get?

As far as bows go I would suggest buying the Titan from 3 rivers. The 3 rivers page says that the titan is 30# which is a really good draw weight. My personal bow pulls in at 34# and I love it, whereas the 18# is not very much. I have a friend that tried using a 17.75# bow and he was either arcing the arrows 45 degrees with every shot or he was getting within 15 of anybody in order to get an accurate shot.

As far as arrows go for material you will want either safety glass (a figberglass that is fairly flexible) or carbon fiber arrows with a high tensile strength so they won't break unless somebody steps on the spot directly beneath the head. For length I would suggest you get something longer than 30", go 32" because when you make your head on the 30" you'll be putting two inches of foam on the head making the bottom of your head the draw stop which is actually not very good because it will catch on your hand and you'll be drawing at about 27" and losing a little bit of poundage, this is why I don't particularly like my newest arrows. If you use the 32" you'll be able to make your own draw stop and take advantage of full draw with each arrow.

Glad to hear you're getting into archery,
-Kraesh

Good bows there, the Razorback (not he JR. just the razorback) is the bow I bought went down to a local archery shop here and ordered from them cost me about $106 all said and done, I love the bow it pulls at 35# on the dot at 28" draw (35# is the max pull your aloud at 28" BoW) and later if I warp a limb or something I can buy new limbs for it instead of buying a entirely new bow

as for arrows I myself prefer thin shafted carbon fiber arrows, you can hold more in your hand comfortably without screwing with your shots 32" like Kraesh was saying is perfect.

Thanks Kraesh. I knew the Titan bow was great. Funny thing is: I found you on this site and I was about to PM you about your bow. I just hadn't gotten to it. Thanks again for posting.

Consider golf tube arrows. They are MUCH safer and MUCH sturdier. Unfortunately, since I haven't made any yet (it's definitely on my list of things to do in the near future though), I can't be of much help on the construction.

Aren't golf tubes like 1" or so around. Sounds like the old schools SCA arrows, and boy did they suck. I would make standard arrows on regular shafts and not mess around with golf tube arrows.

Yeah, they are, but I won't have to feel horrible when one doesn't get embedded in someone's eye. Nor will I have to be all * when people stomp them, and they don't break. The thing is, while the old tech may have been awful, the Kutriguri have some absolutely AMAZING golf tube arrows I exchanged fire with last Rag, and they fly like a dream, don't break, and are VERY safe.

My fiberglass arrows fly like a dream, don't break, and are very safe. "Less safe" is far different from "not safe." You should not give people in the new members forum that impression that our arrows are too dangerous for the field, since they aren't.
