A Question of Names.

Postby Akiha » Mon Oct 10, 2011 11:27 pm

Ok, I am new to the National level and I know it is customary to have a unique fighting name.

My questions are:

Is it considered bad form to pick a name similar to someone else?

If it is acceptable, must I try to keep people from shorting it, to keep it uniquely me?

The name in question is Akiha, and I believe there is a fighter in my area (by that I mean, my tri-state area), named Aki (or some version there of).

The trouble with names only really comes up when you start shortening names. Such as myself and Mr. Vek

My full fighting name is Uargvak, but that's long and complex and people typically call me Vak.

Now thats pretty close to Vek. We talked and poked fun on the forums but its hard to change a name once people know you. If you want to avoid this choose a name that's different and easy to say.

If you are unsure, see if your friends have names they have wanting to use for someone. From my understanding, a lot of people were named by someone else, or due to some event that led to the name.

At the end of the day though. Do what you want, just don't steal someone else name.

I am one of the few in my realm that haven't pick/given a silly name, and I do want my name to mean something to me, so I am not really willing to let someone else name me (if I did, I would most likely get stuck with something that describes my issues with fainting, I really don't want to be known as The Fainting Goat ).

The meaning behind Akiha is that it is Japanese for autumn leaf, and for a while now a few friends have called me Leaf.

I just wanted to be sure I wouldn't be stepping on any ones toes.

Forkbeards name rules:
1.It MUST be less that 3 syllables. Long names you need to correct people on when they say it, or that you have to repeat endlessly for people to get it are lame and dorky.
2. It MUST NOT be some **** made up nonsense Tolkien-esque garble of letters. Again:explaining your name is DORKY.
3. it MUST make you sound like a bad *. This is a killing game, pick a killer name.

And multiple "Leaf"s already. Is it pronounced "ah-ki-hah"?

same with me. In the end the most important rule is forkbeards first one. Unless you want nobody to remember you.

May want to consider changing that......we had a guy at work nicknamed "poopy" because he, well, **** his pants accidentally when he was sick. I can see poppy not successfully navigating that treacherous route.

Pff, w/e. Poppy is fine, there are a lot of people here out east with weird names like that that can rock your world. The name you carry has no effect on how you fight.

QFT

Having the name "Black Cat" doesn't give me the speed, agility, balance, parkour-like abilities, or stalking/backstabbing skills of a feline on the field, even as much as I wish it did.

I understand a name can only be 3 syllables, but is is allowed to have a title as part of the name, so long as the title doesn't include what could be a rank in the Belegarth ranking systems? For example Arthur the Steadfast or Arken the Grey.

Okay, just to clarify for you. There is no actual rule regarding length of names. You can have as long of a persona name as you want, BUT we aren't going to call you by it. For instance, take a good friend of mine. His full persona name is something like Caleidah Ansgar Heldraugh (wasn't there a 4th name?), but everyone just calls him Cale/Cal. So yes, you can totally make up something with a title or whatever if you want, just don't expect to be called by the full thing. It won't happen. Make sure that you pick something easily shortened.

I like Arken, by the way. Short, simple, and I don't think I've ever heard it before. Go with that one.

It's already been said but the golden rule for names is if your buddy cant scream it on the field before your poor sappy * gets ganked in the back find a new name.

With that said i know people with high class and prestigious names and titles like Sir Beauregaurd or Peter the Quick. I also know people who proudly own the best **** for names like myself (Quickie) or Snatch maggot.
If its short and reconizable its gold. you want it classy, or full of disturbed hate and mockery, no one cares. Just find one and stick with it cause if you show up to an event and tell everyone your name is cooter then realize that was a stupid idea there aint no going back.
