Monster or no?

Postby Dante of Shadowdale » Tue Oct 18, 2011 11:19 am

Ok, so I guess this is just a me thing but.... Would Drow be considered monster or something else? Just wondering 'cuz they're evil but they dont look or act very monster-ey, so monster or no?

Not really. Monsters, by monster definition are goblynz, orcs, trolls, skaven, ogres, etc. Drow are too, "human" to be considered monsters per se'.

Also, if your going to do drow, do it up right, do it well. Get good grab and dress the part. Also, don't go around telling everyone you cool backstory, just do it right and let everyone else figure it out.

There is already at least one drow in Bele, and that drow doesn't speak of it.

Drow are so done tho. I'd like to see a really well played/garbed Tiefling.

A) Who cares if it's considered a monster or not, if you wanna do it, do it.

B) Don't just cover yourself in face-paint and put on latex ears. Caked on, flakey face-paint always looks tacky as hell. Real flesh isn't mono-chrome, it has highlights and lowlights, so play with those.

Example: Image

vs.

Image

C) Put effort into it. Look at the BEST of all "monsters", and copy that. If you half-ass it, you'll look like a nerd in a Halloween costume. If you try to look like an extra in an HBO show, then people will start to respect you.

D) Remember, in character "talk" is only cute when you're NOT the ONLY one doing it. 8 Goblyns and dey talk like dis for de HoRde is adorable. One elf going on an on about his lembas is obnoxious.

If you're going to be a Drow, just...don't be a Drizz't clone. Solusar is a Drow Barbarian (fairly certain, anyway). Play around with it however you want, but as has been said all over in this thread, do it well.

And if I find out that you are ripping off Drowtales, I will personally gut you and use the remains to fashion a spiffy hat for myself.

Edit: Morgan, you're comparing someone who got painted and dressed for a studio photoshoot to someone that did it themselves on their own dime. Going to go out on a limb and guess that OP doesn't have the studio makeup skills that would be necessary.

easy solution to the cracking paint issue is using dye. you can get food dye from restaurant supply stores in person or online. They have black. Food coloring is what most monsters/pinkys-with-war-paint use since it just fades rather than flakes. It's not going to look as real as the girl in the photoshoot picture, but she hasn't been running around sweating and hitting people either.

and go for it. when you come to Chaos Wars for the Monsteropcalypse, you will still be an evil minion regardless, and more variety is always fun.

Yes, they do have black food dye, but it is not a true black. When you rub it into your skin, it actually comes out a dull ork green, instead of a straight black. I know, because I just rubbed some onto my leg to be sure. ^-^ I don't know if it would make a difference if you applied many layers though.
If something is worth doing, it's worth getting absolutely filthy over!

hmmm. good find. i would suggest combining the "black" dye with a deep purple or red dye then. the combo of the two SHOULD make a more neutral black since purple has red in it and green and red are complimentary colors. aka, when mixed they create a neutral grey tone.

Maybe if you mixed colors? Like blue and black layered over each other?

Before investing in any large quantities of food dye, test first. Colors that theoretically mix to create another don't always work with food dye, especially on skin- throw in skin tone variation and you'll get some really weird results (i.e. red and blue Tone's brand food dye don't make purple, they usually come out a funky orange-brown color).
