Welcome to Belegarth, and to the boards thereof! As for your question, in this game, axes are widely considered inferior weapons for serious fighting because:

1) They are, by nature, more tip-heavy and therefore more unwieldy than a sword or bat.
2) Lacking edge control, one is much more likely to hit their opponent with the flat of an axe than with a sword.
3) By in large, they break down more easily.
4) The presence of a non-striking surface reduces the amount of weapon you can legally score a hit with.
5) "Shield hooking" or any similar maneuvers, due to the nature of fighting mechanics employed by the game at large, don't really work nearly as well as one might think, as many veterans will attest.

It'd be cool if they somehow did offer some advantage over a sword (i.e. ignoring armor), but, alas, they do not. That being said, if you wanna break 'em out for funsies, than by all means, make like Vincent and van Gogh for it.

Hope this helps! Good luck, have fun, an' don't hurt yourself.
