First, you do not need to be in any unit. Period. You choose to be in one.
Second, that choice is based on a desire to affiliate yourself with like minded individuals. You should take a look at every unit out there and see what each of them has to offer. You should talk to people from the units you are interested in to see what they are all about. I encourage you to talk with the leaders of the unit and the regular members as well. Once you have found a unit you think may be a good fit, see if you can camp with them before you join since event bonding is incredibly important. Take your time, look carefully and only commit when you are completely sure.
You should never feel pressured to join a unit and you should, only because you desire to join, not because your friends are joining. I cannot stress enough that you have to take your time and consider units carefully. Ask a ton of questions so you understand what each unit entails. Remember, units have the right to say no to you as well. Don't let that discourage you. The fit between unit and individual is a two-way street. If it isn't just right, problems will occur and drama will happen. Keep an open mind and bow out gracefully if needed.
Lastly, you can always start your own unit if none of the established units suit you. There is nothing that states that you can't.
