Questions

Postby Maddaveman » Tue Jan 29, 2013 10:30 am

I've been using the search function to find answers to my questions for a few months now and haven't had to post anything, but the time finally came to make an account.

I've been wondering if anyone has seen someone effectively fight with their sword pommel up. Everything I've read has said that it's an inferior method of fighting, but I'm wondering if anyone has witnessed someone utilizing it effectively, particularly in florentine or single blue fighting. I know it's safe to assume that pommel up is awful considering that no one uses it, but my curiosity got the better of me.

Thank you!

I have seen it used, but not often very well. So far as I know the biggest issues with holding it pommel up are shot availability and momentum. In florentine I've seen it used well defensively but takes away from the offensive edge. Keep in mind though that I'm just listing my observations and may be mistaken.

The best way to do what you are talking about is under a shield, but even then it is used primarily for sneaky shots. I don't think this is what you are asking for, but all the other ways I've seen have been nooby-fu

Another issue with it that I've seen in a horrifying tendency to anvil when blocking. Requires tremendous wrist strength.

Another big problem is that when fighting pommel up you tend to strike with draw cuts which are not really sufficiently forceful to be considered a strike.

Our combat is fast, very fast. A lot of our shots use a whipping style motion. Can you imagine trying to crack a whip holding it upside down? Me either.
