Dagorhir

Postby PunWisp » Sun Jun 16, 2013 11:42 pm

Currently I play Dagorhir, which is pretty popular where I am at in Missouri. Soon though I will be moving to Washington state, and come to learn Dag isn't very popular up there, I was told that Belegarth was splintered off from dag, and is quite similar, with some minor rule changes.

Could someone tell me what these kinds of changes are? And if there is much in the way of people playing this in Washington state? (West side, I lived by Mt. Rainier, by Morton & Randle)

Aside from the minor rules differences, you can step onto a Dag or Bel field and not really notice; the fighting is pretty much exactly the same. Styles and the like may vary by region, but otherwise I would say that you shouldn't have any trouble. I currently fight with a Bel group and a Dag group, and the only difference for me is the day of the week I go to the park.

Many of us fight both (and really you can't tell the difference when you are doing it). Some states have total integration between the groups with everyone promoting each others' events, attending them, staffing them, units have members from each, ect. Welcome and I hope you find a good place to fight where ever you end up.

I think the idea is that you throw it less hard at shorter distances. Bows aren't clear cut either since they can have different poundage. Also, I learned a few things from the comparison and have a few comments:

Didn't know you aren't allowed to bash legged opponents in Dag nor wear back shields.
Also, "can't call garb" -

Honestly everyone who plays dag out here does these things, so I wonder what that's about? Bel influence? Old timers didn't change their ways?

Ana, I'm pretty sure that back shields are legal in Dag:

4.7.2 - A shield maybe used or worn in any manner, and it will still remain a shield; e.g., a shield may be carried on the arm, held in one or two hands, worn on the back, or propped against a fighter's side.

Hrmmm...we should update the comparison then. It actually reads:

That sounds like it is an interpretation of this rule:

4.7.6 - Shields may be virtually any shape, but must have handles and/or arm-straps. If a shield is made to strap onto the body and has no means to carry it on the fighter's arm, it is not allowed. As with all weapons rules, Weapons-Checkers and Heralds have the final size in determining what is a shield versus what is armor.

A shield like the one I use when arching is acceptable because it can be used on the arm but also has a strap that allows it to be worn on the back. A shield purposely built only to be worn and used on the back would be illegal.

There is a plethora of fighters in the Seattle area, as well as many cross-gamers.

I think we should put that up instead of the little rule."Back only" doesn't really explain the situation. At least that explains why everyone wears them. :)

Seattle is a bit far for my liking. I will be living in Glenoma, Seattle is a good couple hours away.

Is thread derailment common here?

Yeah, sorry. I was referring to your first post on changes between the groups and thereafter the link that had those changes. Here is the list of Washington groups from geddon.org:

http://geddon.org/Category:Realms#Washington

Looks like Tacoma, WA is your best bet?

Hope that helps.

BAM!

Yeeeah, as someone who used to do Bel and now does Dag, that's more than a bit wrong / out of date.

I laughed at this one:
A shot striking baggy garb, a worn weapon, etc. is a valid strike. Fighters may not call garb.

That's a pretty big misinterpretation of this rule:
4.10.2 - Strikes ignore sheathed weapons (i.e., one that is attached/hanging from one's belt or over one's back) or any other worn object, including baggy clothing such as cloaks. If an attack would have made legal contact with a fighter had the object been absent, then it should be counted as a hit. A weapon must be in a fighter's hand to intercept an attack.

But everyone else is correct -- there are some small differences, but nothing that you need to worry about. Local cultural differences matter a lot more than which of these two games is played, in my experience.

I agree Magpie, the comparisons post makes it look like there are more differences than there actually are. A lot of these differences are more with the written rule, not the practical interpretation.

I'm more intertested in places I can fight at, not really 14 posts debating minor rules. One post suffices in that discussion.

I sent a message to Aleksii on here to see if he could hook you up, as he is listed as the realm's current contact. If they don't notice your invite, try messaging one or both of their FB page admins.
