Viking Arms???

Postby Forkbeard » Wed Jan 19, 2005 7:52 pm

I belive thats what the cool hard leather arms with the elbow cops that I see everyone at events wearing lately.
They are a series or lames above the elbow to above the shoulder and a bracer and a few lames below the elbow. I want to make some because I really like the design, but this would be easier if I had some pictures or the pattern.
Can anyone help a brother out?

Try to get a couple pics of Kaegan's armor. His shoulders seem to match the style that you are trying to build. The only difference would be that the bracer is a solid piece and needs to be split up into lames. The cop will most likely be the hardest part that you will probably face during the whole building process.

Thanks, mam. I'l probly go with the solid bracer. I'm going to cut out a stainless version of the White Skull and rivit it to the bracers and probly put a large paldron that is shaped like the skull and painted to match on the shoulder.
I'm trying to work more symbolism into my armour.
I also think I'm gonna put skulls the knees of my new greaves, but that may not work out.

I've seen some examples of that type of armour. Does anybody know where that style got the name "viking arms"?

I think the "Viking arms" thing is a brand. I've seen it stamped into them like a makers mark. That's why I brought it up that way. I searched the net though, to no avail.
I am glad to see everyone knows what I'm talking about.

im pretty sure cannons is the term for the part of the armour between the elbow cop and the pauldron. the part that covers the bicep.

You could make those for much less than every leather armory I've seen charges, and it wouldn't take long. At least, that's what I would recommend.

Those are the ones. I found some great resouses on the armour archive board for hardening leather the right way. I'm going to start next week.

I dont know if you know this trick, but when you go to stain your leather to the white color that you want your skulls to be you might want to use an acrylic white paint. The first coat will need to be watered down, about 1 part paint to 5 parts water. Then 2 parts paint to 4 parts water, and so on and so forth. And on a side note you might need quite a few rivits to get the metal skull to stay flat on the bracer. Any way good luck.

im not telling you what to do but heres a thought
if you do what kage says then take like a brown stain or wash and lightly dry brush it over the skull bringing out the details and making it look a bit older and thrashed

Ryno, could you post some pic's of your armour. I really like one of you wearing them with your arm striaght, one with them bent and one of the outside laying flat and the inside, so I can see the straps, laying flat.
If not that's cool.
Thanks,

Look at Ryno's photobucket pic's. The show the whole piece, inside and out.
I'll try to dig up someone with a camera to take pic's of mine.
I used 1/2" wide straps to conect mine. I can't really explain. I need to show you. Maybe I'll be able to find a picture. I conect the bracer and the rearbrace right to the cop with the straps. It moves nice and the rivets don't dig into you like they do on ahinged peice.

well i got them made... sort of made up some peices. used a bit of a circular peiece for the bracers to conect and a semi square pei e for the upper arm to attach. it works rather nicely i reckon. im sure youll see me wearing my n ew armor at spring wars. still gotta make the greaves. i wanna make them like the arms, with a knee cop that is. hope i can make it work right.

has anybody though of checking out the armor archive? I like the 15th century arms pattern myself. http://www.armourarchive.org/
