I find this is more helpful:

http://www.alexa.com/data/details/?url= ... egarth.com
Traffic Rank for belegarth.com: 5,245,645
Other sites that link to this site: 4

Traffic Rank for dagorhir.com: 987,692
Other sites that link to this site: 32
list of sites:
http://www.alexa.com/data/ds/linksin?q= ... gorhir.com

In other words more people are seeing the dag page. anything under 1 mill is good. We also need more high ranked/trafficed pages to link to.

Rather interesting how dag has several (can't remember the word) pages:
http://odin.prohosting.com/karfax/

However we can benifit from there hard work. :D

We visit the sites that are linking to them and submit belegarth. Also we need to submit to all the one way free directories we can.

All the information I pulled was from Webalizer that is running on this server, with the exception of the unique vistors to the board and that's from a custom report I run.

It doesn't seem like there is alot of information on that site about us. Why is that?

Webalizer only shows you your own traffic. And that is ok to see and if the number of unique visits is over 1 mill per month then I suggest we have google advertise on the site and 2 or 3 pay per click companies as well. Then we ask everyone click on one or two of the adds every visit and thay will produce some income. then we use that income to pay for banner adds on game sites *runescape would be a #1 choise as would WOW pages* Then we will get the much deserved traffic.

AdSense is pretty easy to set up and configure. Easy to make it slip into the site design. It had my site nearly spidered and delivering content related ads within a day.

May I mention that Runescape has a much younger audience that our target. You want middle schoolers swarming the realms? WoW would be perfect though. Maybe guildwars.

Are target audience is 16-25 (high school and college age people), living in the US. I'm not trying to ignore any other countries, but our support for them can only be our website.

It may be younger, but it has the traffic.

Example: RIGHT NOW they have 85260 players.

and we need a link from a high ranked site like that to boost our alexa ranking and google position. Though a pay per click won't help our google rank much.

Besides what is so bad with drawing in a younger crowd? they will only age into belegarth. And what is stoping kids from creating youth realms? granted there would need to be some support from the local realms and parental super vission, but in the end if we target 12-15 YOs in fatascy games then we should be ok.

Didn't say that there was. Just that my realm got swarmed by them, and it degrades the quality of combat. It's true that they will grow into it, but you have to ask yourself: Do I want people now, or in the future?

how about both? create a time for the kids to come and fight and have several (OLDER) fighters act as teachers and heralds. And then tell them they can watch the bigger guys fight on the other day.

Both would be nice, but in terms of advertising, you could probably only have one. Runescape ads can't be cheap...

true but you point the people here. and from here they learn of realms near them, then it is up to the realm. Now if each realm gets the parents involved as well you will see a major influx of people. Think of it as a cheap way to get people and develope an arts and sciences group.

One thing we could do is create a media page of several AWESOME images and movies that the add links to so the person is Imeadiatly emersed.

Example: any porn site. gives you a few samples and then lures you in.

You have a better keyword than Belegarth? Foam fighting? a lot of people are really gonna search google video for that. And i've seen all of them, but there are a lot more than those.

for keywords (on google video at least) how about "sword" "medieval" "sword combat" or "sword fighting?"

my videos there definitely dominate the "sword combat" search. same with "foam sword" and "foam combat."

Postby Derian » Fri Sep 05, 2008 7:37 pm

I've been monitoring stats since shortly after we switched the boards over to this new server. Here's a few quick ones for the month of August (only the boards are included, not visits to the regular site):

Total Unique Visitors: 3831
Total Visits: 17566 (4.58 visits/visitor)
Hits: 1,352,333 (Totaling just shy of 13.5 GB of bandwidth)

Monday, August 11th was the busiest day

Mondays in general also see the most traffic of any day of the week.

11:00 AM, 2:00 PM, 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM (All CDT) are pretty much tied for the busiest hours of the day.
5:00 AM has the fewest visitors, with just about 0.7% of the total hits.

The operating system of visitors breaks down like this:

Windows: 94.3%
Macintosh: 4.2%
Unknown: 0.9%
Linux: 0.4%

Similarly, the browsers break down as such:

Internet Explorer: 52.2%
Firefox: 42.7%
Safari: 2.7%

Here's how people get to the boards (aside from a bookmark or typing in the address):

Can we get some updates for this?

I'm mostly concerned about how we rank for certain keywords. Derian, would it be possible for me to browse through our Google Analytics account (assuming we have one)?

We do not use Google Analytics (yet). I have awstats running (which does pretty much the same thing), but after I switched us over to nginx, it's not actually accessible. The data is there and being compiled (and if not, I'm pretty sure I have several years worth of logs that we could crawl through if needed), but it's just not accessible without some additional work on my end.

I do plan on getting this up and going again; I'll try to get an update posted here when I can take a look at the data.

I'm not a hugely computer savvy guy, but could you explain to me with a little more detail why we aren't using Analytics or why the information is not accessible? And was is the estimated amount of time it would take for the changes to take place? This morning I did a quick look at Page Source for belegarth.com and was disappointed to see that we are connected to so many keywords. So I wanted to see the kind of traffic we were getting for each of them. I think there are some things we could be doing to better our traffic and for keywords that are probably more important to us than some of the ones that our site currently uses.

Google Analytics requires code additions in order to track the metrics. Additionally, it essentially requires that we tell Google every single bit of information about everyone that visits our site. I'm not comfortable with sharing that information wholesale.

AWStats provides the exact same information that Google Analytics does, except that it's open source and entirely handled on our server. The data never leaves our environment.

Cheeseheart wrote:why the information is not accessible?

It's a configuration issue. For performance reasons, we switched from Apache and mod_php to nginx and php_fpm, which, in our case, provides nearly a 10-fold increase in performance. Belegarth currently does not pay for any server hosting as I donate it to the organization, but this configuration allows us to do more with less. Ultimately, it allows me to save money out of my pocket.

The configurations are vastly different and awstats requires some additional configuration that I haven't done as it was not and is not a priority. The data in question is still there, it just isn't viewable at this time.

Cheeseheart wrote:This morning I did a quick look at Page Source for belegarth.com and was disappointed to see that we are connected to so many keywords

I assume you're talking about the meta keywords? In truth, meta keywords are so easily falsified that no modern search engine places much (if any) weight on these. This has been the case for over a decade.

We no doubt could be doing more to increase our traffic, but keywords are not the way to go. SEO is a very, very complicated matter that, at its heart, isn't entirely ethical. It's essentially gaming how you represent your site in order to increase search engine rankings. Google (et. al) don't really take kindly to this and will in fact actually penalize people for attempting to do so. I assure you that they are much more skilled at SEO than we are.

Derian, believe me, I know the dangers of trying to cheat the Google (and other search engine) system. There are differences between good SEO and bad SEO. I'm aware that simply changing our meta keywords won't make any difference at all, but rather, it might be beneficial if we start engaging in some of the "good SEO" practices, while they are still good. Who knows how the algorithms will be changed in the near future. It's a good policy for any website to focus on a few important keywords, as opposed to too many keywords that don't really hold any relevance for the site itself. I felt if we narrowed our number of keywords and...started building a site that was more centered around those keywords, as well as produced content around those keywords, we could be increasing our traffic. These days, content creation and Social Media are generally the best practices for receiving higher traffic. I have some ideas on some of the things we could be doing as a community (I'd hope we'd have people who could help with the endeavor) to make our site better, if not for ourselves, but rather, for an untapped wealth of people who are still unaware of what Belegarth is and how it is connected to other more well-known activities such as LARP and renaissance fairs, or perhaps other terms that might be more well known or more universal such as "boffer fighting."

We don't need our website to preach to the choir. Those of us who are already involved in the community know where to get the information they want and who to get it from. But that person who's researching LARP groups in their areas or wants to get into medieval fighting or "boffer combat" may not even be pointed in our direction.

I see where you're coming from, and I think we're actually on the same page.

I don't want to reveal too much right now (as it likely will change), but expect to see a completely overhauled web presence (wiki, boards and main site) coming down the pipe in a phased approach. As part of this, I plan on moving to a CMS based site that will allow people to actively contribute and develop content much like you're suggesting. When we get closer, I'll make sure to hit you up for feedback and ideas.

I'd love to be a part of that project. Especially the content management and creation aspects.
