Building the Best test.

Postby Sir Cairbre » Mon Jul 24, 2006 11:39 am

Anyone here M$ certified knows how brutal a M$ cert test is. I am going to make one.

Simple Php login, and it will pull marshalling questions from a database(db) of questions at random on 6 specified topics. It will pull 5-7 questions from the pool of basic questions on each of the topics I have been dividing marshalling into , these will be very tough questions, multiple choice, but basicly essay questions basicly like; here is the situation.. here are 4 individual paragraph responces to what is the correct recourse of action to the situation.

As your going through the test if you answer a question incorrectly suddenly the test gets longer. If you miss say a question on weapons checking now the system is going to ask you the rest of the basic questions on that topic, and then 2 more questions that are way more advanced on the topic. if you get those wronge it will drill more advanced questions on you until you reach the maximum number of questions you can respond wrong too.

Basicly I am talking about a realy cool online test that rocks your world if you don't know how to marshal.

Why? Why not make the test extremly difficult? Why not test the limits of knowledge and put the testee up on the chopping block?

I've never seen the M$ test, but my mother told me about the nursing certification test where ALL of the answers for a question are correct but only one is the BEST. Would that be feasible?

I'm just saying, that what you feel is the best way to handle a situation, and what I feel is the best way to handle a situation, might not be the same.

The point of a test and standardization is for both of us to conform to a standard.

I think the issue that was being addressed is that of how we know that the standard you are setting to be conformed to is correct. Obviously you can't post the answers and have a collective group verify them.... so... basically.... just getting several good heralds to all agree on questions and answers and that they are fair and accurate would be good.

However it turns out, I DEFINITELY look forward to this, and thank you for endeavoring to create it. Thank you.

Yea, I certified MCSE + I awhile ago, back when it was still windows NT. Complete waste of time, and money. Oh well.

I might attempt to program a herald test, under Java. Would do it in C++, but am learning Java at the moment, and would be good practice on my part. At a later date, I might throw out some questions, on what questions to put on the test. Assuming I get around to writing the code.

21 month thread revival? Epic.

Is anyone still interested in this? It sounds like a good idea, but the problem is that along with this, there needs to be a body to govern and support herald certification.

It's something that's been kicked around forever, but nothing has ever been done. It seems to me like that's the best starting point, and tests and things of that nature can follow once there's a groundwork.

Plenty of people are interested derian, I just think that "national" certification of anything but realm status is like trying to get democrats and republicans to agree on any substantial issue that would actually be good for our country.

agreed, yet another killed in commitee.

what if the 2 of you just did it. i mean really just put it together, call it a national certification, and let the credibility build itself. i think this way you bypass all the bs and it gets done. it needs to be done, i think if a couple of good heralds just make it, people will sign up to take a class at events.

That actually doesn't sound like a bad idea.

If it doesn't build itself credibility then it's no problem, is it?

So we're finally getting some momentum on this then?

Derian wrote:21 month thread revival? Epic.

Yeah, it was not far down the page if I can recall (slower moving forum); I honestly did not look at the date either, but it is a good topic and worthy of a same-page bump in my opinion. I mean if it weren't for the bump this potential momentum may not have happened. :)

I'll go resurrect "1000 reasons why Horde" again now... ;)

I can get some things from faline and rhys who ran a heralding class last spring for people who were not confident in their ability to herald because no one had "taught" them how to do it. However this is always a touchy subject because of who thinks what should be done for heralding. I for one think that weapons checking should be kept kind of separate. On the field you can always find someone who you trust to check weapons, and that's good enough for me, why should that stop you from being a herald? However in a lot of heralding tests I've seen this is a large portion of them. Other problems that have come up are differing interpretations of rules, which include how a rule should be enforced, as well as what should be enforced...Other than that I'm always looking at what kinds of "Tests" people are coming up with, it would be nice to have a discussion based on those tests.

but those variations are never going to go away, as long as both sides are discussed, at length, then a clear answer can be derived from the students. i mean we get different rulings on the field anyway, so teach people both sides of the argument, let them hash it out for themselves. at least they will have the info this way.
