Sweet. Not to knock the fighters, as they both fought very well, the knight with the round punch did not seem to use it as effectively as he could...you know, keeping it "out there" to tie-up/slow the strapped shield users attacks as the strap shield user *clearly* wanted to get inside. Once he got inside the legged knight with the punch shield, that was picture-perfect SCA style locking up the opponents weapon and shield and the final thrust was well done indeed.

I wish I could have participated but my mental game is not quite that advance.

The knight with the round center-grip is Sir Uller. From what I've heard, he's the one that introduced the greater populace to center-grip fighting. The shield is smaller then what he's used to as the rules for the tournament required a maximum of 26" center-grips.

These tournaments are something you do not enter lightly. They require a year long commitment. You need the help of several good friends.

I have been participating in the SCA for about a year and a half now and I figure in about another 5 years I will contemplate fighting in crowns. It is something you have to take very seriously to even enter. You have to be prepared for all the responsibility in the chance that you win.

Winning the Crown Tourney is how the king or queen of the kingdom of chosen. I believe that the winner serves as prince for one six-month term and then is elevated to king the following term although that may vary depending on the kingdom. If you see anyone holding the title of Duke, that means that they've served as king for more than one term. The Crown Tourney is held every six months and typically brings some of the best fighters from throughout a kingdom.

Think of War Council all rolled into two people and you'll have just the tip of the iceberg of what the duties and responsibilites are for the crown. The crown has authority and power over kingdom level laws, rules, membership, awards, etc. The king/queen, their retainers, the prince/princess, and their retainers expected to make a presence at as many events as possible during thier reign.

Off subject:

In the SCA, with it's much larger population, is there the same.... pressure... for everyone to have a unique name?

You can register your name and heraldry with the College of Heralds which is society-wide. The name needs to period, certain ones are not allowed.

There are lots of people with the same name, because lots of people in the Middle Ages and Renaissance had the same name. "Geoffrey" and "William," for example, are quite common for men with English (or, I suppose, Scottish and Welsh) personae, because they were common names for English, Scottish and Welsh men six hundred years ago. No one in the SCA, at least no one with a registered name, would have a name like Bubbles or Peanut, like people in Belegarth often do.

Or a name like "Kuroneko" or "Black Cat" for that matter.

Kuroneko is 'Black Cat' in Japanese in case anyone is wondering. As for the Kanji symbol(s) for the name, I still need to look that up.

There is a "travel fund" that helps the Crown with expenses. The amount of loot (gifts) that is laid on you can get overwhelming. I was King's Champion to a SCA King called Valharic and I'm not bullshi*ing you when I say that at the end of each fighting day uber-hot young girls were sent from other Kingdoms to his tent to rub his aching body before he went to sleep. No, he did not know these women. It was insane.
The SCA is huge, and we should be growing, but we are losing prospective members to the boffer/Larp groups because of various hurdles inherit in SCA culture.
The type of fighting we do takes a great deal of work. Armour costs money. But I suppose the biggest problem is the was we make knights...
