I like to use my cheater heater and a lightsaber (now that I finally made one). I also like to use my 36 in. long handled green/blue as a back up.

2 36in greenblues and a buckler

Oblong grip Mediumish Punch and long sword.

Occasionally Polearm (i.e. almost never, but it is fun)

And I've arched a couple times with varying degrees of success.

Single sword (think Kendo. Looks similar at least.)
Red glaive
Going in with nothing's fun sometimes.

Almost always glaive though. I'm still not good enough to stop focusing on it yet. Mostly though, I luvs it.

I fight either Florentine or Sword'n'Board, depending on the situation.

Flor sets:
2x 35" blue-green scimitars
1x 36" blue-green sword & 1x 33" blue-green sword
1x 33" blue-green sword & 1x 23" blue-green sword

all counterweighted with oblong handles.

S&B:
24x36 1/2" ply heater strap
or
29" 1/2" ply round strap
with
a 33-36 inch blue green (one of those swords above)
or
the 23-incher (for awesome times)
and possibly with another sword in my shield hand, esp. if there're reds on the field.

I'm still working on a javelin, so that may get integrated soon...

I am still working on building a complete set of weapons but currently I have a 66 inch short halberd, a basic blue sword with a 32 inch blade, a lightweight 18" round strap shield and a much heavier full size heater shield.

Currently, I'm working on a 50 inch red sword. I also have a more durable halberd, an 8 ft spear and several blue sword refinements on the drawing board.

Half armor, round or tear drop shield, long sword, dagger, and 8 foot glaive/spear. And a rock or javy if I have time/space.

Shield on my back, rock tucked between back and shield(mainly as a comforter) long sword on belt (soon I'll make a custom harness for it), dagger hangs from my neck on a tear away cord. I use the spear as a primary and once there isn't a shield wall to hide behind I go sword and shield.

8' Bandshoppe Pole spear
40" Fiberglass cored flail in my backhand (I sometimes drop it to get better spear control)
12" Dagger in my belt as a backup backup weapon
28" Round shield w/ backstrap

I used to have a 37" bladed sword until it failed.

If you're Danny Devito, I guess. My largest weapon is 5 feet long in total length with a 16 inch handle, much shorter than it's true-to-life inspiration.
The rest are between 3 and 4 feet in overall length.

Depends on the core.

For PVC, I like as fat a bolt as I can fit in the core, about 4-5 inches long for a blue, possibly with a nut screwed up to right under the head if I need more weight. Lately, on my shamshir, I used a thinner bolt because of the flattening of the handles, so I used 12-15 metal washers that just fit over the bolt.

For Round Fiberglass, I just use washers of whatever size will fit around the end.

For Square Fiberglass, I use washers or nuts, whichever fits better, rounds of metal (like, cut off of a piece of round bar stock) if I can get them, and slabs of bar stock along the sides of the handle core as both oblongers and counterweights, if I can get them.

I might add a wrap of wire over or under the rope/hockey tape on the grip if I need more weight once something is put together. Thinking of doing that to my shamshir... they balance a little bit high, yet, and they're still light enough that it wouldn't hurt anything.

Primary: heater shield with 38" sword

Secondary: 29" round punch, 38" sword

Tertiary: spear, back-up sword, back shield

I often switch out the swords with a 34" stabby mace, a 42" stabby beatstick, or (VERY rarely) my 36" rope flail.

I like my round and long sword.

I enjoy arching, though I haven't had a bow for two years.

I also like, two hand sword, like 4-4.5 ft long. Short polearms about 5'long with stabby. I like shorter swords if I am twin weapon. That's about it.

I currently don't have any of these weapons built yet, but they are on my current projects list and I already have the materials I need to build most of them.

I will be wearing a buckler with all of these sets except #6.

Set 1:
Archery

Hungarian horn bow, uniformly black. Rated at 32-33 pounds (currently on custom order)
This bow will likely be a little more powerful than an average bow of the same poundage. I hope that this won't be a problem at weapon check. The bow doesn't have a string bridge.

with bow case, back-quiver, hip quiver, and backup blue sword

17 short arrows; 24 normal-length arrows
(not all arrows will be carried at once)

Sets 2-4:
Red Weapons

2: Roughly 6 1/2-foot overall length red/green glaive with Banshoppe pole core

3: Roughly 5 1/2-foot overall length red/green glaive with 1" schedule 80 PVC core

4: Red/Green Odachi - Roughly 5 1/2 feet overall length (slightly shorter) with 1" schedule 80 PVC core

With backup blue sword

Set 5:
Florentine

Weapon 1: Small redsword (about 50-52 inches in overall length; counterweighted)

Weapon 2: Long blue sword (about 40 inches in overall length; counterweighted)

Set 6:
Sword-and-board

Red sword or Long blue sword (either of the two weapons from set 5)

Round strap shield (Roughly 26-28 inches in diameter)

BC, for some reason (maybe it was all of those comments of yours about how useless you are in melee combat), I picture you as being small of stature and not particularly strong. No offense intended, here, it's just the image that has been presented to me.

a) Is this mental picture wrong? Right? Mostly one or the other?

b) Even presuming it's wrong and you're a pretty big strong feller, I must say, Florentine with a Red is not an easy thing to do, if you plan on using typical Florentine-style techniques. A pair of lightweight, moderately counterweighted kitespar 42-inchers, sure; a standard construction 52" 1/2" fibercore Red? Mmm... I wouldn't want to do it, anyway.

c) For your round shield, either offset the straps towards the front/inner edge of the shield or build it ~30 inches around instead so you can avoid getting flail-wrapped on your shield arm without coming out of shielding position.

New sets for me!

52" Red-Green sword, counterweighted to 20 inches

38" Blue-Green sword, counterweighted to 11-12 inches
w/ either 30" round strap or 16x16" plywood punch target

and I've been Florentining my scimitars lately, a pair of 37" blue-greens with some counterweighting, to ~13" or so, I'd say.

I am about 6 feet tall, but I am small in appearance. I am also fairly lightweight at about 145 pounds. My muscles are fairly strong for my size, but I have to use more muscle groups to be able to swing most weapons than most guys my height. Which leads to telegraphing, which is why I'm useless at close-quarters combat. I can swing just fine, people just see it coming from a mile away no matter how quickly I swing. My comparatively slow mental reflexes don't help matters either.

Basically, I can't swing anything worth a crap with my wrists alone, but if I use multiple muscle groups to swing a weapon, I can swing something that is fairly long and heavy with little trouble.

I can even swing Wumpus's 10-foot redsword, though it takes all of my strength and a lot of concentration to get a red-worthy swing with it. The last time I swung it, I had a very wide swinging arc and the amount of telegraphing I did must have been insane.

I am mostly using the florentine set (set #5) for side-sparring or field battles during regular realm practices. Unless I happen to get good with it, chances are I won't be using it for field battles at any events I go to. I will probably be using either bow & arrow or some kind of red weapon instead. Maybe sword-and-board as a skirmisher if I feel like doing it at the time.

That's the problem I have been having with my first shield and the reason why I retired it. Thank you for reminding me of it and telling me how to fix it.

If you're swinging correctly, most of the power from your swings should come from your core. The arm guides the shot, but it doesn't have to power it.

I must not be swinging correctly, because using my core increases my power greatly, but it makes me telegraph. Even while using lighter weapons.

Hopefully, if I can start making it to practices again, I can find out why. I know there are people out there who can use their core muscles and not just their arms without telegraphing, but I can't seem to do it.

In case you don't already know what it is, telegraphing is your body language giving away where your shot is going to end up long before it gets there. A lot of people wrist-shot or use their arms instead of using their core muscles to swing a sword to combat this problem. This is one of the reasons why kitespar weapons are so common in Belegarth. At least that is my best guess as to why people use them.

Your arms are probably lagging behind your body. Are you twisting your core, and then kind of using that momentum to whip your arm and weapon into motion? No matter how you do that it'll telegraph. If that's what you're doing, just try keeping your arms at the same place in relation to your body and turning your hips to make a strike. Just use your arms to control blade angle. In doing this the tip of the sword should begin to move at the same time as any other part of you, there shouldn't be any windup, even if it's in your legs.

Also, use your arms to throw feints and disguise the trajectory of your shot. A little fist pump or elbow pop can go a long way toward convincing your opponent to adjust his guard.

Several excellent fighters use different arm carriages to provoke certain blocks from their opponent, and then it's a simple matter of them turning their hips and flicking a wrist or elbow to change the destination of their shots without sacrificing power.

I don't know who out in Aquilonia would be willing to train you any, but anytime you find a vet that you think would be amenable, ask for some sparring practice. It can't hurt. Well, except your pride and body. Heh.

Sometimes I get a wild hair and go with the Edhellen battleax (red) but more often it's a typical blue and a sturdy bashing shield.
Actually, who am I kidding? my primary weapon is a big heavy tankard.

I love sword/javelin. Very fun, not necessary the best tactical, but very very fun.

I think the best combo in Belegarth is sword/board, particularly a mid-sized teardrop plus a beatstick/lightsaber.

Set 1 : Edhellen I think minimum length red or Tha Bruces super buster blade red and two leather bracer's.

Set 2 : Florentine Hatchets... Not very big hatchets at that.

Set 3 : Round strap shield and medium length sword.

Set 4 : Large rectangle Punch shield only.

Set 4 is used in bridge battles... I have I think I have one of the if not the highest Kill : Death ratio of everyone at our field in bridge battles using this.

I love using the red and fighting reds with the red. =)

My primary weapon is my beautiful 65" redsword. I rarely use anything else unless I feel the competition needs me handicapped, then I pick up a lil redsword.

Hatchet, Edhellen's mini-red doesn't pass for weight. It weighs only 20 oz according to their site.

And yet, I still see them used on Belegarth fields...

I need to put up a poll: What Realms actually weigh weapons when they check them for use at local practices?

My Claymores about 2 pounds and about five feet give or take...?

Edit: Looked at Edhellens site... * swords are two handers?

Most people have them counterweighted. No arrakis, people are stupid, even though it may not initially pass for weight, people now how to fix their gear (most times).

Mel, I have personally picked one up off of the field and used it and it was so very not counterweighted. I know that I've never had one of my weapons weighed at weapons check for local use. I know I've felt under-weight reds and blues on our field down here.

That's a difference between your area and ours, I think. We weigh in Dunharrow, and some of our vets bring scales to other practices, and some other practices have scales of their own. It's not terribly often you find underweight weapons up here, bought twice a year.
