Maybe I can even make this thing semi-useful. :)

Isn't Irish stick fighting more commonly known as "Going to the bar to play pool?"

This style looks totally backwards to almost everything I was taught about fighting: stick up near the chin, and horizontal, and gripped near the middle, etc.

I tried it today and it was surprizingly effective one-on-one.

So that's how the leprechauns evade capture so easily. They just block your attack, konk you on the back of the head with their cane, and run off.

I've been wondering how they did that...

Which parts? the fighting at elbow-strike range? bapping the handle on the forarm to re-chamber faster? something else?

This stuff looks bad *. But it definatly looks like it just boils down to "if I'm fast and have good footwork to dodge attacks and keep me in good position, I'm gonna **** some dudes world up."

Also, the first technique totally doesn't work for us. You'd have to take the forearm hit. Unless it was light I suppose, but I avoid any swing that involves me hitting myself ;)

Thomas, if that's the video I think it is (too lazy to check right now), then I use the grip my sword at handle and then, again, partway down the length and hold the whole thing nearly horizontal near chest height.

IMO....

this guy learned some martial arts, codified it into a system and cashed in on Irish culture. I seriously doubt this was passed down over many generation of irish stick fighters. Keep in mind this is just my opinion.

I think it was this guy's dad that did it. In the series of videos, the only other people he mentions using these techniques are his dad (often) and his cousin (once). ... and his cousin got a stick thown at him.

I think a real stick fighter, say from the philipines, would kill this guy in about half a second.

actually yes it is indeed we've been found out... Anyways it does look like it would be fun to attend. I see only trace amounts of Martial Arts mixed in. But than again unlike popular belief Martial Arts was not just confined to asian culture. They did however take it to the next level...

After trying it for a while I've come to the conclusion that these techniques do work fairly well against a single blue sword or somebody else holding the same kind of stick - not well enough to beat somebody that's already better than you, but well enough to impress a newbie or two when you use it against them.

Against a shield or two swords or a polearm you are horribly handicapped.
