Canne de combat

Postby Kyrian » Wed Apr 01, 2009 7:31 pm

I wasn't quite sure whether this should go in the Fighter Development forum or this one...so I went with this one. As far as I can tell, it's full body targeting and shots only count if the arm is in a chambered position prior to the shot.

Some things to observe:

1) Their use of range.
2) Wrap shots aren't just done in medieval sports.
3) Use of body movement to avoid shots.
4) Hand switching.
5) Some (at least to me) impressive acrobatics.

That is very cool. The acrobatics are pretty awesome. They really moved, didn't hold themselves to one position or place. I too noticed some hand switching, mostly by the guy in the orange. The fighter in gray really liked to go low to either avoid or strike. Overall, quite fascinating.

There are some interesting things with the how targeting works and such.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canne_de_combat

Valid attacks

Only valid attacks are counted. An attack is valid, if it is done with the techniques described above, and:

* Every strike must be armed
* The hit is clear
* The hit reached a valid target zone
* The hit is done with the upper 1/4 part of the stick
* The stick is in one line with the hand
* There was no sabring movement

Rules
Bouts are held in a circle with 9 m diameter. The cane is held with one hand but the player can change it from hand to hand during the bout. Strokes are made either horizontally or downward, thrusting or stabbing blows being prohibited. The scoring zones are the calves, the torso and the head.

To count, all strokes must be with the cane, and low blows must have a lunging movement. The bout is won on points, the lightness of the cane and the protective clothing making a knockout impossible. Points are scored for style, according to the correctness of body positions during fighting. Contact with prohibited areas such as the arms are penalized. It is thus possible to win a match without landing a blow on one's adversary, if he or she accumulates penalties.

It's like ultra-light SCA. Very interesting indeed.

That does seem strange, since I imagine the arm and hands would be a legit target in actual cane fighting along with thrusting. Maybe it's for simplicity of scoring, or maybe fighters are encouraged to parry with their arms and grasp (although I didn't actually see any of that). Either way, it looks like a hell of a lot of fun. My interest is piqued.

Another thing that you'll notice in the video is the lack of simultaneous shots, the rules allowing for only one combatant to attack at a time. It certainly makes for a more interesting view, and shows some correlation to shot/block exercises. I like that the governing body for this is the same group that covers Savate Boxing, French martial arts are rad as hell.

Savate is in fact brutal. Just like Sambo.

take the protective gear off, add some chainmail and of course a minimum weighted sticks, add a back yard, some budweissers and you'd have HACKS
