Starting a house

Postby Runner » Tue Dec 01, 2009 5:58 pm

I am currently attempting to start a house with people that are interested in belegarth. I want to keep the number to less than ten people (too many or too few?). However, I need some advice as on how to operate the house. Ideally, I want to operate where every member has some sort of say as to what happens in said house.

Some general leadership advice is wanted and most appreciated.

You haven't gotten the best responses because your question was pretty vague and because of the flexible terminology here.

Perhaps ten years ago Houses and Units were generally pretty clearly defined and separated. Houses were usually groups of people who socialized and participated together in the non-fighting aspects of the game. Units, on the other hand, were often based on combat solely.

Today, however, the two Houses I can think of (House Dregoth and House Hellhammer) certainly do spend a lot of time together in the game while not actually fighting, but they also take the field representing their House. Likewise, most/all units also spend not only their field time but after fighting socializing and so on together. The lines are very blurry today.

So, that said, what exactly are you looking to do? Adding some more specifics will allow people to offer better advice.

Don't copy our banner and social structure, like the rest of your realm did after they couldn't unbunch their panties.

**** yes.

I can't wait to make awkward conversation with a bunch of people that already know eachother, and then stuff my face full of food that I didn't do any work for!

I still have that set of trinkets from last year, although I swear to god I have memory of what they were intended for. I hope you'll understand, as I've been drunk several times since then!

Not only do I understand, but good job :)

There should be more people you can have awkward conversations with this year, Cinci should be making a showing ;)

After noticing that, I'm going to be very careful with what I do. Once I get the name figured out, we'll take it from there. Also, thanks for the advice.

I just wanted some general advice on how to govern a house and keep it together. Everything mentioned so far seems quite sound. I do plan for there to be a combat aspect to the house/unit/whatever with an aspect on cooking. Thank you for your attention and all that jazz.

A House is a group of friends who want to hang out with a symbol and a "name". How the hell do you think a House is run?

Thanks for noticing. :armor2:

It sounds more like you want to form a unit instead of a house, though the lines are certainly blurred. How about you start with finding a few folks that also want to form a house, you get along with, and have similar interests with. After that, decide what kind of unit/house you want to be, how involved, more combat vs rp vs non-com oriented, etc. Slowly work out the details of what you want to be, then start in on the who you want to be.

I can send you a copy of our handbook, but we might be a little too involved/intense for what you are looking for.

EDIT: Hash, it's on, like Donkey Kong. ;)

Yah, I think the key your missing here is that most houses/units don't start from one guy deciding he wants to start one. None of the successful ones do anyway. They start from a group of guys sitting around in an apartment one day, maybe drunk, maybe not, and being like "You know what would be awesome? (Insert their seemingly cool idea here.)" And then they do what they say they're gonna do. And I would say 95% of the time it's dead in a couple of years. But 5% of the time they end up a few years down the road being the leader(ers) of a national unit.

The biggest thing is knowing that if you're some 16 year old kid whose been fighting for a year and you're doing this, most people aren't going to want to join you. You're just not a stable foundation for leadership, and you're not one of the big groups that already have a reputation for being awesome sauce. But if you're in your late teens/early 20's, you have a strong theme that's really cool, you're not a douche bag (being a bad * or just really cool certainly doesn't hurt), and you KEEP STANDARDS AND NOT JUST ACCEPT ANYONE WHO WANTS IN (good fighters/people want to be with good fighters/people, not a group of newbs) you have a much stronger chance of being in that 5%.

A unit doesn't have to big, just full of dedicated people who will keep it going with good leadership, time and charisma (in my opinion anyways)

Our unit is mostly people from our realm (with the exception of maybe two people?) but we're slowly growing..

Another tip- Join an existing unit for awhile so you can become a better fighter and learn key leadership skills and traits..then when you feel ready break off and do your own thing.
