Amt/Bel shield work differences

Postby Brennon EH » Wed Jan 27, 2010 12:39 pm

Michael wrote up a great article on the various differences between shield work in Amtgard and Belegarth. It's pretty interesting, so go give it a look.

Diplomantic? Well yes but I actually like both games and play both games weekly so I have to be diplomatic.

Come on MHoG,

I would assume/expect you did not take my comment as any kind of a sleight. I have always respected and appreciated your diplomatic nature. Diplomacy is not a bad thing. I have been a party to your cool head more than a few times.

I really don't want to know how frequently you're a party to his cool head, Loptr.

Another key difference that should be touched on is how turtling is less of an advantage in Bel due to this rule:

3.7.6. If an opponent has both knees on the ground, a strike to either Leg is considered to have struck the good Leg. If the opponent is lunging or rolling around and has a disabled Leg and is hit in either, it is considered a hit to the uninjured Leg.

In Amtgard, a legged shieldman doesn't lose much ground defensively because they can hold their own by positioning their dead leg in front, blocking shots and angles to their good leg. In a game with shield contact, dramatically positioning your good leg behind your center mass in order to protect it can be exploited by an aggressive shield check to followed by a beat down on either legs. If the dead knee is off the ground then it no longer acts as a shield.

An excellent point, Giggles and one I knew but forgot since my doctor doesnt allow me to fight on the ground in either game. I will edit the article and worth with Brennon to get the new version up.
