South central PA, dude, you don't live near me. Still though, aside from calling it dork battle, I think it's awesome you're doing this.

My adivice:
Stop with the Dork Battle name. It's offensive.
Do not let Darkon people cheat. (limping on a bad leg is cheating in Dag and Bel) Why in god's name would you let people from one game do this and not the rest? That's just gay. If you say your using Dag's rules, use them.
Don't say "no garb". Garb is always important. No letting people wear armor to practice is different.
Otherwise, this is a great idea. I wish you great success.

Why is it called dork Battle?

Because we are a bunch of dorks playing pretend with foam weapons.

As for Garb, I don't like it. I'm a stick jock.

As I'm holding this as a practice and not an event, garb is not necassary.

More people will show up if they can wear some shorts and a Tee.

Darkon people can limp because it's easier that way. Head over to Tuesday practices in Catonsville, MD and tell me they have any problems.

I'm not doing this to grow any specific game, just slinging foam.

Magpie,

Everyone around me calls it Central PA, but I'll get around to editing the site with a better geographical description.

NEWS though, got contacted by Gettysburg Amtgard. They'll be sending a few fighters down.

York Dagorhir fighters will be there.

Also, a couple members of the Dragonhood.

Thanks for the support, and get the word out, too long have petty political squables kept all foam fighting event attendance lower than it could be.

Thanks go out to everyone who cross games.

I get what he means. Stop being douches and support the effort to get fighters from different games together.

I don't really see what the confusion is.

Every member of every foam swinging organization is a nerd, playing pretend with foam weapons.

I like to play pretend but I like to wear gym shorts and sword fight more. I'm still a loser for playing with toys and indulging an in imaginary universe created around a pseudo-sport.

If you are not self aware enough to realize no matter what, each and everyone of us is a dork, a huge dork. No matter what element of the game you enjoy, you're still wearing a costume and pretending to sword fight.

If it helps, this isn't my first rodeo. I've been playing * for close to seven years.

If that's what you want to think, go right ahead. It's okay to be wrong. I'm an athlete in a sport. As a true stick jock (something you seem to be unfamiliar with) I wear a uniform that identifies what group I'm with and fits the standards of the sport I play. You'll find this is universal across all sports.

Dudley S. Thunder wrote:I like to play pretend but I like to wear gym shorts and sword fight more. I'm still a loser for playing with toys and indulging an in imaginary universe created around a pseudo-sport.

Self deprecating humor doesn't work very well on the internet. You're basically saying "I do this thing, and I'm loser for doing it. This is a place full of people that do that same thing. Therefore.... connect the dots...." That's just not true. I pretend NOTHING when I fight. I'm not a knight in shining armor, or an ancient aztec warrior, or a Uruk. I'm a dude using the equipment of my sport to accomplish my sports goal.

Dudley S. Thunder wrote:If you are not self aware enough to realize no matter what, each and everyone of us is a dork, a huge dork. No matter what element of the game you enjoy, you're still wearing a costume and pretending to sword fight.

The first sentence doesn't make sense, it's incomplete or I'm reading it wrong. But the "You don't think this is dorky? You're weird." Argument is the most craptastic argument since this show on history channel I'm watching about the "proof" of ancient ETs visiting ancient cultures.

What we wear, is a uniform. Any sport, when you view it's "garb" outside of context, looks **** silly. But what I wear doesn't match any kind of medieval clothing. Belegarth, and sword fighting in general, has developed its own style and culture. We don't match any one ancient culture, including anything European. There's a few people that cling to this recreationism, but the vast majority of garb planning goes like this: "That dudes garb looks **** cool. I'm gonna do that, but I'm gonna change this little bit." And over years, we've got works that are totally original. I mean, Amtgard is the best example. The big thing with them right now is HOCKEY JERSEYS. **** awesome.

Dudley S. Thunder wrote:If it helps, this isn't my first rodeo. I've been playing * for close to seven years.

I might not like it, but I respect it, it's called Dagorhir. It sucks, but those that dislike it do so out of a learned and mature dislike, not grade school name calling. As an organization it doesn't deserve that.

In conclusion, for some of us this isn't some silly game, it's not LARP, and it IS super serious business. We're not saying that you have to be like us, but we ask that you respect our point of view. We're not silly.

Just to clarify:

dork
–noun Slang.
1.a stupid or ridiculous person; jerk; nerd.

jerk
–noun
4.Slang. a contemptibly naive, fatuous, foolish, or inconsequential person.

nerd
–noun Slang.
1.a stupid, irritating, ineffectual, or unattractive person.

Anyway, it's fine that you don't like garb. However telling other people what not to wear is lame. If you can wear shorts and a t-shirt, why can't others wear what -they- like to fight in?

Oh yeah:
P.S. Padded weapons rock, because you don't have to wear armor (A), and because people (mostly) don't get seriously hurt (B).

Good luck with your cross-gaming.

You guys all suck. A lot. This dude is encouraging cross-gaming, in an area that really, really could use it. He went out of his way to come to our board and invite us, one and all, to hang out. He prefers not to wear garb, and made mention of it so people don't feel obligated to show up decked out.

Get the **** over yourselves. Christ. And we wonder why there's so much inter-game **** hostility? Douches who can't take a simple invitation to come hang out and fight without turning it into a giant turd-fest.

Wow!

Aside from the people who decided to eat the * soup for breakfast, thanks.

Arrakis,

Yeah that sounds fine.

Arrakis is correct though, I am in fact just a huge internet douche that enjoys the overreaction prevalent in the dork community.

Perhaps my point was a little vague, engaging in these type of activities is inherently nerdy. By actively participating in said recreations, you a nerd/dork/what have you.

I'm not saying beneath that nerdy exterior is more nerd, in some cases yes. But, in most cases beneath lurks a personality.

I use the terms nerd/dork/dork battle affectionately, not with any sort of malice. I can see how that doesn't transfer well through the internet.

Pigeon holing foam fighting as a nerd game is for sure a pet peeve of mine. With all jocks I've seen attracted to the sport aspect of foam fighting, I feel that it's own people treating it like a nerd game when it's so much more does nothing but hurt recruitment.

All I'm saying is that garb is important and in the long run makes for a more serious fighting feild and membership retention.
And everyone on the field HAS to be following the same rules. If the darkon people get to drag a dead leg, so should everyone else.
To have people following different rules according to the game they come from is stupid.
And I am not a dork. Neither do I pretend to sword fight. I play Belegarth. It's way, way diferent from sword fighting.

Yes, I fight terrible people all of the time.

You know everyone in the Aratari and everyone who fights from Michigan to GA.

I've said I'm a dork. I know I'm not some super cool guy.

My **** attitude has kept me in vag and friends for awhile, so until it doesn't I'll continue to tell people the truth.

Truth-

Everyone who likes engaging in any sort of foam/rattan/cosplay is a dork.

Everyone who has taken the time out of their life to respond to this is a dork.

If you still haven't gotten over the fact you play a fantasy themed LARP, regardless of how you slice it you are a dork.

I would much rather hang out and fight a bunch of people without their heads up there asses than having a bunch of tools at my place talking about how many girls their new .484 Solid carbon cores are going to get them.

(Serious note)-Get those cores, they rock and can't be broken.

If you don't suck at life, practice is at 1pm this weekend.

Just when I was starting to think that Bel people were as shiny and happy as any foam swingers alive, we get this. Everyone agrees with this guy's project but disagrees with some details and we get the silliest flame war I have seen in a week. I just wish I was closer I would hit these people with foam.

No ****. I wish I could drive 3000miles to just to hit the guy in the nuts.
It's probly what he's looking for, though.
Alas, my practice is less than 3 miles from my house, so I'll have to go there and hit some one else in the nuts.

You know what's funny...

Cansu/Kai used to use the term "dorking" on this board all the time when she wanted to refer to "foam fighting," and no one complained.

This is so **** funny. Belegarth will always be judged by it's biggest mouths. perception may just be reality after all, I defend this game so much, but *! Yawl make it hard.

You all have no idea what you are talking about. Recruitment has never, and will never be a problem in our area. Our Tuesday night practice in Baltimore is attended by 3 different games, each can use whatever rules they want (including any combo they like, I die to 2 limbs but drag a dead leg). It works great. Do you have ANY, ever so SLIGHT idea of the old hate between Darkon and the Aratari?!?!? The old heads in both groups STLL sling **** at each other about some * that went down when Rome was still a Darkon unit as well as a Dag unit, that was almost 10 **** years ago. But we have members of both games who just enjoy hitting each other, no probs, no politics.

And it's a **** practice, * do you need garb for? When the Ravens practice they only wear jerseys when they are doing team drills... The rest of the time, they are in sweats and t's... If PRO sports teams do it, we can too. lol

Yawl need to get off your make believe high horses.

And Cansu will laugh hard when I tell her about this, she used to play at our Tuesday practice as well... Dork battle is fun, I'll do it till I can't anymore. And you can only criticize things on here if you are in the cool crowd... Learn that and you'll get less grief from people who think they are important.

I don't know anyone who thinks they are important.
I'm certainly not.
I just think that an activity that everyone isn't following the same rules(i don't even care who's) is pointless. Aside from scocialising. You can't have people legged on a knee AND people who merely drag the leg on the same field. You also can't have people doing homo majic on a field where people are NOT doing so.
Any more that you can have football players on the basket ball court mixed in with soccer players.
I also firmly beleive garb is important. Also, if there is no lack of practice out there, why does this chode need to start another? I assumed becuase he was in an area lacking a local practice. If there's already local fighting with a huge turnout, he's just diluting things, which I also disagree with.
I think we are experienceing the difference between east and west here. Out here, we do not have the population density that you do in the east.
There are only about a million people total in our entire state, which is geographicly larger than all of New England. With every so spread out, the available number of potential fighters lead us to really think hard about our image. Everythings gotta be very cool and co-ordinated. When people come out to check out your group, you've only got about 20 people for them to meet and about 20 minutes before they get bored. If you look like dorks insweats, they don't want to spend their leisure time with you.
If you look like interesting people doing something physical and competative. They stick around.
Garb makes this work.

Good point on the "advertising" aspects to what you have to do! I feel for you. We really don't care if people stay or go when they come and check out anything we do in this general area. We have a glut of humanity to choose from to beat up.

Dudley (aka "This Chode") is merely hosting a practice a little over an hour away on Saturday mornings to give people another place to fight as we like to do so often. I am lazy/busy and will most likely not drive to PA to fight when Tuesday practice is 15 minutes away and I can fight by whatever rules I like.

And it does work sir, you are mistaken (inexperienced in this particular topic). I fight cats from Amptg. and Dag every week who drop to their knees if they like, and they are fighting along side with some Darkonians who don't. No one in their right mind would use magic or armor at our practice, why would they? What would that teach? That's more effective in 80 on 80 or 100 on 100 person battles... Not the 10 on 10 we practice with in sweats and t's trying to get better at swinging sticks. No one brings bows either...

I tell you one thing that's really cool about our practice: little "isms" that exist in other games creep into your game and give a very unique outlook on fighting. I wish the experience on anyone who doesn't think they are the best and likes sword fighting by any rules.

"Things have to be done the way I always do them because that's the only right way to do them and any other way is STUPID!!!!!!!1!!!SHIFTONE!!!1 Also your practice session is so tiny that you're all STUPIDDDDDDD And everybody from all over the U.S. is going to show up and be disappointed because noBODY IS THERE!!!"

- The dude just wanted to get a big sword fight going, and he laid down the rules he'd be playing by. If you don't want to play by those rules, then don't show up. If you don't like his attitude about foam fighting, then say something nasty and then don't show up. I just had to laugh when somebody declared that they weren't showing up, but then tried to dictate how things were going to happen anyway.

"Thanks for the invite, dude. It's a cool idea, but I'm too far away."

- I agree with this sentiment. I'd go if I could. If somebody didn't like me wearing garb, they could just deal with it.

Thrush knows me so well, this flaming-poo-slinging internerd battle was totally worth the five minutes... AND I got called ahot chick! Bonus. Thanks to everyone who participated, and extra thanks to Dudley for giving people an additional opportunity to get out and have some dorky fun. Don't let excessive dignity ruin it for you.

And you would be insanely welcome at Tuesday practice too! Even in garb... It happens on occasion. It's just not what the masses do...

I'd rather wear garb pants than destroy a pair of sweats every two months knee-fighting.

Are your garb pants cheaper than Walmart sweats? If so, then that makes a lot of sense!

I like football cleats, gym shorts and a sleeveless t-shirt for practice... But right now I can't find my cleats, so I'm wearing my normal fightin' boots (Israeli desert boots).

Cleats? Is that a joke? Yeah, please, kick my shield and step on my weapons with your cleats, that totally won't be hella detrimental to their soft, squishy, foamy bits...

Actually my soft rubber soled football cleats have softer less painful/damaging soles than my Israeli Combat boots I wear to events. Much less the Vietnam style jungle boots a lot of other people wear, those and hard plastic soled soccer cleats are the worst of all. I am not a * sir, I would not wear something that would damage shields when I kick them. I understand your misconception though, it is one I have had to explain to many under-informed people.
