few questions from someone new to events.

Postby Somstog » Mon May 09, 2011 12:18 pm

Hello everyone, just wondering if you could provide some insight.
a few of my friends and i were planning on attending geddon. we've never been to an event before but will be driving down from wisconsin. questions:
how much does it cost (per person i imagine)?
what's the food situation usually like?
If we own only one set of garb, will we be yelled at for wearing normal things during non-combat?
Is there access to showers?
I NEED my morning coffee, how do I go about this?

that's all i can think of at the moment. i've been camping a good number of times, so the basics are familiar to me and also have a tent, sleeping bag, etc.
There's no kill like overkill.

You can usually buy lunch at the event. I'd bring food for any other time. I can't remember if geddon has just one feast or two, so someone else will answer that.

I'd try to make a set of night garb, or at least keep your fighting pants on for nightlife. It just makes you look better.

For coffee, I use one of them $10 campfire coffee pots from walmart, pretty easy to use. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Wenzel-Camp-C ... t/15111414
Something similar to that, but they have a cheapy blue one that works fine.

Stonehouse has a bathhouse, with 3-4 showers, so you should be set.

And you're only ~15-20 minutes from a walmart in sandwich, so if you don't bring enough food or forget something its not a big deal. Also pawpaw, which is only a few minutes from the campground, has a grocery store and a casey's

Congrats on your first event!

ok, thanks a lot! one thing you forgot to mention is the cost though. how much? i've read enough to know a little bit about preregistration and the "troll". is it cheaper if you prereg? also, i read somewhere that there's power all around stonehouse, is this true? and one last thing (for the moment, sorry), should we bring wood and such for a campfire, or is that usaully covered by larger groups?

Yes, most campsites have a little box with outlets, so you should have access to power.
And regarding fire; most sites also have a fire ring or pit, and you can buy firewood from the camp store. You can also use what dead wood you can find around the park, but bringing your own wood into Stonehouse is forbidden. Most events there is usually a large centralized bonfire, but it will depend upon who is running the event and what nightlife is planned. So whether you think you'll need your own fire is up to you.

Do try to make some garb for off the field. If you're walking around at night without garb on, you'll be heckled mercilessly.

I think Geddon is doing two feasts this year. Be sure to bring food for lunches and to snack on during the day. You WILL get hungry between meals. Granola bars will be your best friends. They're mine, anyway.

False. I've never once met anyone who's a big enough tool to heckle noobs coming from out of state to their first event for not having evening garb. If somebody mistakes you for a lazy vet, you might get ribbed a bit, at worst.

Glad you guys can make the trip!

I suppose I should have defined the "heckled mercilessly" as "ribbed about your garb and encouraged to continue to garb up, perhaps talking about what might fit your persona well."

That's what I would do and have done, anyway. Also, if you're going to be in need for more garb, make a post or browse around the boards. Some people have used garb that they'd be willing to part with or be willing to make you some at a reasonable cost.

QFT!
When my group went to Spring Wars, I was told the first night was casual so don't worry about showing up in garb which was fantastic because to get there before nightfall, we had to leave directly from our last class and drive straight through. We were practically the only people who were not garbed when we showed up. I wouldn't say we were heckled mercilessly but we did get a lot of "haha n00b" comments. Lesson learned.

Yes, there is a bathhouse with showers on site.

Another fun thing to do for morning coffees, is if you have a french press, you can just boil up water, and do that. In fact, I'll prolly have some locally roasted coffee and french press, because I work at a coffee shop, and get that **** for free!

There will be some vendors, and they will have garb for sale. Otherwise, other fighters might have stuff for sale. If you want, you can get a hold of some of us Madison fighters, and we can try and do a garb making day.
If something is worth doing, it's worth getting absolutely filthy over!
