Running Garb Blog

Postby Caleidah » Sat Jul 04, 2009 1:33 pm

I got tired of fighting in sweats and some shirts that I had cut down, so I finally decided to drop the cash and make a nice set of garb.

The tunic is made from a linen that was on sale at JoAnne's. It wears well, is amazingly comfortable, and feels like it'll really breathe well. The pants are from some broadcloth that was on sale. That said, it's fairly soft, has a bit of stretch, and just generally wears well. The tunic and pants were from Simplicity patterns.

Yes, I know there's some odd stuff around in the pics. I was using my mom's sewing area (and a lot of her help).

Not sure what simplicity pattern you used but be careful that your pants aren’t too fitting in the thighs. I used a simplicity pattern and the pants fit really well but I kept blowing the crotch out. I’ve since started wearing baggier pants. The stretch will help too.

Your new garb looks good though. Nice job.

It's got plenty of room in the thighs and the seams around the crotch are heavily reinforced. If I start blowing out, though, I'll make a baggier pair.

It * me off that I can't find it, but the tabard is soon to be adorned with the Daemonhunter Icon that is a sword laid over an open book.

I'm going to be going through a bit of a transition in garb, as I will soon be fighting as a Bugbear. That said, I still plan on wearing the nice garb that I have. Dead pinkies don't need the clothes anyway.

So: I'm going to get some pics up of said nice new garb as soon as I take them, starting with this one:

I liked the Grey Knight symbol of the sword and the book.
Ah well. Looks great, man! I wish I had a sewing room like that!

EDIT: I just realized that I was listening to the Sisters of Battle theme on a youtube playlist. Seemed appropriate to mention that, speaking of Deamonhunters and Emperors and all!

More pics of garb soon...hopefully...

In the meantime, did some sketches on stuff that I thought looked cool. Uploading a few of them below.

The first is a rough draft of what I want on my shield. I know the writing is hard to read. What it says:

Wux geou faestir ve ghoros shio lyriki.
Wux geou svent svadrav si meage.
Wux geou loreat ergriff svadrav si yenta zyak.

Translated:

You shall serve me before all others.
You shall slay when I command.
You shall die only when I have no more use for you.

It's all based on some character background stuff that is liable to change at the drop of a hat.

Image

The version with the flames that will eventually be in much better quality and colored and, ya know, on my shield:

Image

And these are based on the "Ninja of Kindness" title bestowed upon me at Geddon by Bo.

Had to use my laptop camera for it, as the charger for my actual cam has been missing for a long while.

Yeah, the trim is scarlet. I don't know if the taking a knee thing will be a concern, but I guess I'll find out when I wear it on the field. The original inspiration for the piece was the undertunic that Ezio wears in ACII. It'll look all kinds of boss with the rest of my garb.

And Caleidah, I'm truly digging your getups. I'd never think to do them in brighter colors, which I think really do contribute to the quality of your pieces, but the styles alone are appealing to my tastes. Keep up the good work and keep on fighting the good fight.

Arakkis, feel free. I'm likely going to be making another one in white w/ gold trim in the near future, possibly double sided so I can look pimpin' while heralding as well.

For performance, it wore great at 'Geddon, despite the mud weighing it down. Never once caught when I took a knee.

Kind of a **** pic, but this is my other most recent piece of pretty. Made it before Spring Wars for Theros's Fancy Feast. I love how it came out, though my chest has grown a bit since and it is bordering on being too tight to button. Fortunately, it looks good when left open, too.

Image

This is the only good pic of me wearing it. I'll have to hunt down my camera and take a better one.

The green surcoat is slick and looks good with a little mud on it too. You don't catch your toes on the back flaps when you're on your knees do you? That worry is all that's stopping me from making something with deep coattails like that.

I got caught on it exactly once, and it was after getting bashed flat onto my back. I planted my foot too close to my * and it tore a little bit. That said, under normal conditions, it never got caught. Any time I'd extend a leg out behind me on a knee, the cloth would fall between my legs and out of the way.

New toys! Recent pic with my current amount of armor (grieves and arms). It really pulls the kit together.

Image

Aaaaaand a gift. I met the person that gave this to me about two weeks ago. Talked to her a few times, and then today, she says, "I have a gift for you." I headed to class, and when I came back a few hours later (she was hanging around at school) she handed me a plastic bag with this in it.

Image

Now I just have to come up with garb to wear with it.

Yup. Unfortunately, the way they were assembled kind of limited the motion of my arm. Oh well, live and learn. They're still pretty good for a first piece of armor.

Creativity doesn't work unless you're procrastinated till the last possible second. Six years of community college, I should know.

At least be happy you're not in the phase where you procrastinate until the last possible second, then still find yourself working on armor at a feverish pace for two months prior to the the event.

What software are you using to make your custom embroidery shapes? Or are you just using stock designs?

Are we looking at something like...... THIS ??

That looks like a significant investment. I expect you'll want to use the **** out of it to get your $$$s worth.

Care to commission some simple emblems?

Could definitely do that, in time. DOn't want to take on any commissions until I have familiarized with it and worked the bugs out on a project or two of my own.
