Battle For Strathclyde May 14, 2011

Postby Cib » Tue Jun 07, 2011 10:06 pm

Hi all, we held our 3rd annual spring event up here in Alberta Canada "Battle For Strathclyde" in May and I finally have some photos up. Our first year we had 9 fighters attend, last year we had 26ish, with up to 21 on the field at a time, this year we had 29-30 with 28-29 on the field throughout the entire event. Way cool. Anyway, here are some photos:

(We are still working on getting people in to garb, so we are starting to give awards for "best garb" such to encourage that). And here is a video:

There was a fare bit of discussion in some groups up here abut that afterwards. I know I saw a thread discussing this on this board a wile back, but I can't seem to find it. Does anyone know where it went?

Another video (only the best of the same footage previously posted but edited to look better):

We had 6 different towns/citys attend, which was way cool, and also had some Amtgard guys as well as some people from another LARP, pretty exiting for us.

Awesome Cib!

Keep up the hard work, it will pay off.

I see some decent looking garb in the center back/left of that pic you posted.

Things that concern me though are the monster jav-head guy on the right (couch cushion foam?) and baseball cap guy down in front center. Spandex dude has been touched.....well, covered......ugh, you get the point.

How was the fighting? Tell me more about the jav and how it relates to BoW rules.

Ya, there was some improvement in garb this year, some people who wore jeans this year, didn't this year. There were quite a few cool peaces of garb, but unfortunately the wearers often lacked any other garb to go with it. One group (eg. shirtless guy up front) somehow missed the fact that garb was a requirement in Belegarth until the day before the event.

yes.. um that. That is mine. All our javs were broken and we wanted to have at least a few at the event and I attempted to fix two but they got failed the day before at practice, so I ripped off the foam and put on some foam from a foam mattress, making it very soft but also very big.

Nicely improved, the field is much more even in skill now. In past year there has been a small handful of us who were vastly more experienced than everyone less, this year there wasn't so much of a gap, and a higher percentage of experienced players. This was also the first year we had archery on the field, I think we had 3 or 4 bows (usually only 1 or 2 in use) which was cool.

Fighting was good, accually had enough people for... 4 or 5 teams of about 8-12 for realm battles from all over alberta.

I don't remember seeing the ad for this event. Because depending on where it is Montana is a close southern neighbor, and I may be able to talk people into coming if it is in southern Alberta. It just may be difficult to get weapons thru customs.

Ya, sorry dude, I forgot to post the ad here this year. I figured that a half day event wasn't enough to get you guys to come up. I think we are getting closer to the point of being able to think about holding a weekend event though (now that we have 3 big half day events under the belt, + other smaller ones), and then we will be inviting all our southern neighbours to join us.

Coming up? Probably not, getting your gear back home? Might be more difficult. A few of us are coming to chaos this year though, and one guy when last year and had not trouble. Though sometimes I wonder if Americans have a harder time going in to the US from Canada than Canadians do by some of the stories I have heard. Honestly though I don't expect much trouble on account of the "boffers".
