Since the topic got brought up in its own thread; not all "fantasy weapons" are illegal in Belegarth.

I can name two different types off the top of my head I may eventually get around to building. (but don't count on it)

1) Big Swords. Cloud Strife. Ichigo from Bleach, Guts from Berserk. Etc. Etc. I read that a guy on these boards named Sleeper loves using redswords of this type.

2) Big **** Axe. Preferably built with a fancy, artistic blade profile for that true fantasy axe look. Then decorated with Plastidip on the flats and courtesy padding Fitz Caliston style.

I may eventually make a 4 1/2 foot OAL version of #2. (though definitely not anytime soon)

Just helped a friend build a "gunblade" earlier today. Just a nice long single blue with a curved handle/pommel and a trigger looking thing below the crossguard.

Anybody who has made enough weapons has experimented a time or two.

We called this one "El Kabong". I understand that when my son got it, she gave it a brown cover with guitar strings drawn on it.

Image

This discussion dovetails with an idea I recently had. What do you guys think about a short (4-5 ft) polearm with a wooden handle and a 3/8" electric fence post drilled and glued into the handle to act as the core for the blade? To my thinking, this would allow some interesting handle shapes but keep some flexibility in the blade.

That looks pretty cool and sounds pretty cool! i wanted to make a sword with the blade length of a typical blue or ours where its like 22 inches or less i dont remember with a over sized handle like 30 inches. i dont mind the blade length its the handles i care for, just for that extra bit of death

I have also been thinking about making a mace for this but i dont think it would come close to legal unless it was solid peice of foam 22 inches long and didnt have all the cool details it would also be good for a prosthetic weapon but they cant be strapped to you so you know but look at this website they make really amazing armor its all hand crafted and everything they have one piece of Uruk-Hia armor for those people who are part of the faction its scouting armor but with some monster make up and stuff you could make it look really amazing. Heres the page that was the mace and the armor that they forge http://www.steltercreativewoodworks.com/STELTER1/Witchking_Cosx.html and the Uruk-Hia armor http://www.steltercreativewoodworks.com ... rmorx.html

Yes, giant swords are the shiznight. People just don't like them cause they are to weak to swing them. And they are kinda specialist weapons, line fighting but glaives do this job better. Giant swords are probably more for show than anything. Reason i like em. All they require is strength.

i have a giant sword its about 3 inches shorter than me, I made the blade length the size of a normal red and the handle is ten inches in length. And I built it with half inch PVC so it fails miserably but yeah reds are fun especially when you make TOO big so its really unfair for the opponent. my friends say I shouldent use it and well their right it bends dramaticly.

The main problems will be securing the fiberglass core to the handle. I've worked with similar difficulties repairing a few fly fishing rods. You will want to form an anchor on one end of your core that fits into a notch in your two piece handle to keep it from popping out over time.

You will want the core to go into the handle sleeve at least 15" for stability. To make an anchor you can use a small piece of PVC that sleeves well. Use a fiberglass or acrylic epoxy on the inside of the piece of PVC tube (lets just say 1" long) then brush the outside with the same glue after you slide it onto the fiberglass rod. Let it cure before you start to put it into the handle.

To make your handle use two pieces of hardwood plank glued together then saw and sand it into the desired handle shape or it will splinter pretty fast. Wooden dowels don't hold up to this kind of stuff very well because they're made on a bad angle with the wood grain. I'd secure the anchor of the core with a rubber epoxy and the handle in place with a good quality wood glue so that your handle is more rigid but your core will have a little more give. I would recommend using ash or maybe hickory for weight/strength on your handle.

I can see any Belegarth weapon that has a core for the blade and a separate core for the handle being about as durable and reliable as a Deku Stick.

That being Said though isn't to say it's impossible. It's just going to be much more expensive. People used to think the same thing a few years ago (like the 70's) about plywood. They said they wouldn't be as effective as solid wood but nowadays plywood is stronger weight to weight than most solid piece woods. Scientifically this is because having cross-sectioned wood grains gives extra stability and adhesives have come a LONG ways since then. You're still better off using solid wood for something that needs three dimensional strength like a handle though.

I just thought of something pretty cool I guess. I'm a big videogame fanatic kinda. But what i'm getting at here is an Energy sword! I think that would be pretty cool the whole thing being a striking edge. I also think it would be sweet if the handle in the middle or what ever it is, could come off of the blades that would have a piece of PVC or something running all the way through it so you could have two swords! But I think I would just stick with the two swords disconnected rather than connected.

Already been done.

Cheeseheart's Sith unit uses them. They're basically sword-bats or clubs with red covers and lightsaber hilts. They don't do the snap-together into a staff thing though; that's not possible with foam weapons that require a padded pommel.

Because never in history has any sword had a core separate from the handle Black Cat. Use your smarts big guy. That looks nice as hell, I bet those handles feel great in your hands.

I was specifically talking about the half-tang "extend the length of the core with another core" crap that has been plastered all over these boards lately.

I wasn't referring to putting a separate handle over the top of a core, aka. Full Tang. What Thomas has there isn't a separate core, it is a solid core-like fitting that goes completely over the top of the weapon's actual core. Big difference, especially in terms of durability.

Yeah, I looked for a bit but I remembered this forum so I posted it here. It is fantasy weapons after all. And an easy weapon build is a pretty good fantasy. well for me. I kinda have a tough time with the measurments, I screwed up my brothers sword but about 5 inches.

Yeah, note on fun-noodle swords. We just got done taking apart 4 Amtgard bats, which are typically made with fun-noodles, and they are just plain ****. You might as well make a sword out of tissue paper. Or use those Nerf swords.

Those are good for teaching a friend to fence a lil bit, but they really hurt if you hit somebody full on. I did that with my brother and I'm teaching my friend how to on sunday. my brother uses the fencing techniques with his sword. It's good for fighting against one other person if your a skilled player, but he cant get a good stance to be able to block a straight up chest shot. that was over explained.

Yeah, that's my mentality of all Amt weapons. People will whole heartedly and heatedly disagree with me, because they think it breeds laziness, but frankly, I say that anyone that's going to take the easy route over personal improvement in this sport is just going to pick up a tower and flail anyhow, so they are exempt from this topic.

I like using fun-noodle, golf-handle swords when I can't practice them with full Bele swords yet, because something else is holding me back (I cant work on endurance, or drills with Bele weapons, because I bruise too easily still; my muscles and tendons aren't quite strong enough yet, so I get too much wear and tear on them with the heavier weapons).

But to me, they're stepping stones. These are the weapons I would give to underage kids until they learn to stop making head shots.

As for fencing techniques, just buy/make a speedbat/quicktube. They're basically rapiers/sabers. Good for dueling, not so great on the field (:ducksbeforedelugeofragedebate:)

Ok well I need to throw this one out there. There have to be alot of people who have really wanted to make these. Predator claws. That would be pretty sweet, especially with some peoples armor.

Well it would also be fun to have a bazooka, but that's totally out of the context of this sport.

Now this would be great for people who preffer a pole arm.
A Spear/Halberd/Glaive. It would be like the normal Halberd. With a blade and spear tip then on the other end a glaive. Or a sword with out a pommel but, another blade instead.

That which you are speaking of is a double ended weapon. There are rules in place for those aleady. Basically it just ends up becoming a quarterstaff.

Oh. well I just thought of one. A blade with a width of like 10", blade length is lets go with 48" and a handle that is 7/8th's in thinckness up through the entire sword. The weapons best use would probably throwing it on the ground and running because it would kill you every time you swing it.

With the weight restrictions on crossbows being 15lbs I don't see why you would need to draw the arrow back using the method they did with Gastraphetes. Simple arm strength would suffice and then you just have an overly complicated bow that allowed you to imagine shooting someone in the face with a shotgun. Impractical in our game IMO.
