Core tip reinforcement

Postby Tordek » Wed Nov 02, 2011 12:41 am

So for those of you who watch "how its made", they had an episode about larp weapons. One thing that caught my eye however was that they do the 3 piece sandwich method (2 sides and a u shaped center sandwiched between them with the core in the groove) but they reinforced the top 12" or so with some polyester fabric between the sandwich layers to prevent tip blowout. I haven't tried this yet but i build my fiberglass cored weapons that way and im planning on testing this out. What are all your thoughts on this process?

Can you link the video, if it's on the net yet?

Some Dag guys use several coats of Plasti-Dip in the same way; I reinforce the tips of Eryndor-style swords that way sometimes; A few Dag fighters I know of are reinforcing reds with fabric.

A lot of people rip-stop Nylon or any medium or light durable woven like 60/40 broadcloth pr trigger poplin would do the trick, though.
Another option is Volara wraps, GvK style.
I for sure will try out the wrapping cloth with DAP on it over that top of my next min red, but the other thing I do quite a lot is what Arrakis said, PD. There seem to be a couple different methods, but use this as a springboard: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=291514877542195&set=a.213256885367995.66212.100000510541632&type=1&ref=nf
Odd is using sword fries, which I have none of. I just put on my first two strips of blue foam to build my box, then PD the **** out of the "flat" and at the top. Two or three layers. This seems to add longevity, reduce flex and it's easy to tear off and rebuild.

i definitely need some reinforcement like this on my swords, i lend them out and they are often used to hit with the flats which just rips the tip off fast
i know that's just really bad form and is a problem in itself :P but i blew out a lot of tips too using them properly

as soon as i get the funds and the time (both over thanksgiving break) im going to try either ripstop nylon or polyester (also rip stop if i can find it) and put those on the flats at the tip. I was really impressed with the durability of that blade for how narrow it was, thing wielded like a dream (now if only its wielder could catch up with it).
