Would this pass?

Postby Driger the Wolfhound » Sat Jan 21, 2012 2:42 am

I'm currently stationed away from home. So one of our memebers who is building weapons decided to creat a short spear for me. he sent me a pic and measurements so far. But once i saw it i just had to ask if this would be legal in a big event? im pretty sure it won't be if y'all could tell me what he needs to do to modify it so that it can pass weapons checks. and from there i can let him know.

I'd say shorten it down and use it for a sword the duct tape on the striking surface kinda worries me a bit still legal just worries me a lil. If you really want a spear get some pipe insulation to cover most if not all of the haft. I'm gonna say it'd be best to rebuild the end to resemble more of a spear it looks like a mini glaive so far. It'll need a stabby tip for sure. And what is the core cause it needs to pass for flex too.

Your best bet is to make a sword out of it and order a javelin from ed hellen you should have a p.o. box is pay of your check in process when you get to a new unit unless your admin sucks which is usually the case lol

So tell him remove duck tape swap out with cloth tape. would that be it? oh and im assuming the core is PVC from the pic he sent me. and he said he added open cell foam under the stabing tip layer. idk if thats enough padding for a stabbing tip

It real question is whether or not its stabbing only or meant to be swung. It its a red too, then there is a lot more wrong with it than duct tape.

1. IF its pvc pipe then it WILL fail for flex at that length.
2. If its also meant to be a red then there is not enough courtesy padding on it.
3. The two small pieces of duct tape you have on there will not cause it to fail.
4. Open Cell for stab tips is an old method. It will work, but it WILL break down faster.
5. Cloth cover, but I'm assuming that will be added later.

So in summation, if its PVC pipe, I would go ahead and scrap the whole thing, and tell him to start over with either 11/16 ths fiber glass or a bandshoppe pole because PVC will flex too much at that length. If its not, then if its meant to be swung then you need 2/3 of the weapon padded, not 1/3.
