Question for Arrow Construction

Postby PrisonPhish » Wed Feb 15, 2012 12:20 pm

Alright, I am fairly (i.e. VERY) new to Dag/Belegarth, but I was wondering about something for arrow construction.

After applying Duct Tape to penny diameter and adding the penny, could I use a foam noodle as the siding of the arrow, covering the tip with another layer of blue foam (or an equivalent) and then capping with Open Cell? As long as the noodle didn't slip and conformed to 2" rules would this be legal?

Thanks so much,
Mitchell

Welcome to the Boards. Becareful in General Mayhem because sharks live there. My advice is to use the search function of the board as many quesitons have already been answerered, and SOME veterans here get grumpy about answering questions that continuously come up.

The answer is your question one last time though: NO! The foam breaks down far too fast for it to be used in arrow head design.

Thanks, and next time, I will be more careful to search thoroughly through the search box (sorry grumpy veterans!).

No worries, you asked your question in a cogent, respectful, and above all grammatically legible format. We appreciate these things and will generally answer questions asked in this way.

You can build as stated and they will be OK, not great but ok. The main problems will be the arrow pushing thru the 2# and the noodle foam is not durable enuff.

If there is any wiggle between the shaft and the can foam (noodle) the arrows will wear out fast.

In my experience, A single layer of blue is not enuff to stop the force of the arrow. You need 4# EVA or military camp pad to do that job.

I tend to quote Barley's foamsmithing advice. Since it's generally awesome. This falls within that sphere of awesome.

If you must cap with all blue foam, use two layers of blue foam that are glued together before being glued to the tip. Do not use only one layer of blue foam to cap the arrow before putting the open-cell foam on. I wouldn't rely on the noodle foam to stop anything, at least as far as keeping the arrow from punching through the cap is concerned. I would highly recommend that you find and use some 4# or equivalent foam for the first layer of the cap and still use a second layer of at least 2# foam.

Personally, I wouldn't even use noodle foam at all. You're better off drilling a center hole for the shaft and a counterbore for the penny cap in a DAP-glued stack of 4-5 2" diameter blue foam discs for the head/can.
