I'm loving the lacquered look you've given it by some angles.

Thanks Midget!

I am currently moving, with all my leather materials being shipped cross country, so in lieu of photos...

In response to a question from a recent PM:

i was wondering what you use for a pattern to cut it our of the leather to get the shape right.

Before I start any project, I create a pattern from poster paper. This way, I can ensure the fit by taping the pattern together and putting it on my subject.

Start with the measurements. Measure half the circumference of the torso around the bottom of the ribs, the distance from the top of your shoulder to the bottom of the ribs, and the distance between the shoulders. Now draw a rectangle on some paper using the above measurements.

Then draw out the neck hole cutouts and arm hole cut outs. Your pattern will differ in these areas from the front and the back. Take a look at existing armors to get a feel for the proper proportions. I actually based my initial pattern off one from Sieglatan's armor thread. I think its the thread relating to "sliding rivets." He did a nice job of showing the process, I thought. I also prefer the design he uses in that thread for mobility around the torso and ab area.

The hard part is deciding on the depth of the arm hole cutouts. I typically have my subject cross their arms across their chest, and measure the distance between the arms, and using that to determine how deep to make the arm holes. This will usually leave huge gaps in the armor, but will allow your subject to throw cross shots without bruising themselves. The Europeans filled the gap by using deep pauldrons. The Asians used smaller arm holes, but then used a seam in the center of the chest that would allow the armor to flex. Personally, I prefer the look of the European option, which is why I have made my chest plates as I have.

Good luck, and feel free to ask any other questions that come to mind.

I love the new helmet, did you do it prior or after the move?

I understand the need for the ear holes, would have liked to see something other then a big round hole though (maybe cause I have huge ears and fear them sticking out through the hole, overlapping the leather then getting shot with and arrow.....) Maybe something that looks a little like an elvish ear shape?

Will the visor/faceplate slide up?

Thanks Fitz. This was post move. I had to knock it out quickly cause Dash needed it by Chaos.

A fun idea for the ear holes. Next time I may have to play with it. Dash wanted something pretty simple though, so I tried to keep it so. The faceplate does rise up, as well. However, it is so large that the helmet looks pretty odd when it is raised up. Another design piece that may change later.

That's an interesting idea on the helm cut out. I could see reversing the pattern so that the main seam is in the back thus leaving the front with a smo
other face.

A little facade cover up over the big stitching would/could go along way and add some extra spiffy to the arms and legs.

Looking forwark to seeing what the rest turns out like, and wishing I had your airbrush instead of the POS ones I get at Harbor freight.

A+ for use of the feather as well.

Very cool looking armor set, and the black/blue gives a really nice effect. There are so many black/red, or annoyingly bright color combos out there. This is soothing to the eyes.

First off, very nice suit! I'm jealous...

They aren't the cheapest around (about a penny a link for galv 14g), but I use http://www.theringlord.com for all my chain needs. I love that they have bronze links since that's a metal & color I'm partial to. Their shipping isn't the fastest since it's coming from Canada but I haven't had an issue with them the few times I've ordered from them in the past 8 years or so.

I haven't checked this thread in a while and I'm glad I did. Tonight is my realm practice night and I'm **** stoked to swing foam because of this.

I wish I had the skills and the time. Amazing work; especially incorporating the fur into the orc pauldrons. Simple idea, yet perfectly executed.
