all foam shild reinforcement.

Postby Flynn Cu Maige » Tue Oct 09, 2012 12:23 am

So heres my plan. Glue two layers of foam together. cut shield shape(after making card board stencil) run arm and back straps through slits in desired position. secure straps down with glue and tape.

Now heres the hard part...what should i put on the face before the final foam layer for some added strength?? Will cardboard do it?? Or should i dig out ruts and insert tent poles and glue them down? or do i have to procure money to find plastic? id prefer the most cost efficient method but shoot me what ever works.

Use dap, glue 5-6 layers of blue camp pad (from wal mart) together, no reinforcement needed

You can go also go with floor mats like this:

They are just 4lb eva, but they will be a sturdier base than regular blue foam.

thank you guys. if extra foams in my budget ill use that method. a guy here local says he uses cardbard between three layers and his shield is roughly a year old now..gonna give that a go if i cant afford the foam. thanks again.

If you go with the cardboard make sure you glue a couple sheets together with the corrugations(right word?)perpendicular to each other. Your best bet is probably going with all foam though, or maybe a plywood core.

cut up the lid to one of those plastic storage bins, then you have a large sturdy-ish peice you can glue to the back of your shield, stiffening it up

you could just use fiberglass resin. light weight and is sturdier than cardboard or more foam.

If you can find some, corrugated plastic is full of win.

Out of curiosity, just one sheet total? or would you use a sheet between each layer? never used the stuff before.

Depends, there are different thicknesses. Just started looking into it after I was gifted a kite shield made from it.

Idk every one of these methods sound like too much work. When I made mine all I used was a 2.25'x60"x 3" piece of 2lb and covered it with .25 MC foam super easy needs no reinforcement at all

Grumio doesn't use any support in his coreless shield in this tutorial, excepting the handle. Maybe throw a handle in there? That'll make it a bit for versatile as far as how you can use your shield, and perhaps fix your flex problem.
