FOR SCHEDULE, PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO ADDITIONAL POSTS

We are pleased to announce Battle for the Ring V, a national Belegarth fighting event over MLK weekend (January 18th-21st) in Chino, California. Battle for the Ring V is a four-day camping event, with 3 days of official fighting. Last year BftR drew over 250 fighters, on our first year as a camping event at a new site; this year, we hope to eclipse those numbers with hundreds of fighters from across the country.

In addition to providing an excellent and intense fighting experience, Battle for the Ring is focused on growing the sport by introducing new and cross-sport fighters to the national Belegarth community.

For more information, check out our Facebook Event page at http://www.facebook.com/events/337623429646600/

Registration: Pre-registration is available for $25, otherwise registration is $35 at the door. To Pre-Reg, send $25 through Paypal to battle4thering@gmail.com, or mail a check to Anduril C/O "Ana Nagel" at 521 South Lyon St. Unit #22, Santa Ana, CA, 92701. Please make the checks out to "Ana Nagel." Make sure to include your real and fighting name so we can add you to the list, and print out and bring along a copy of your Paypal confirmation email. These fees go to pay for the site, insurance, feast, prizes, and etc.

Fighting: Official heralded fighting Friday afternoon, all day Saturday, all day Sunday. Unofficial fighting Friday morning and Monday all day. We will feature massive field battles, theme battles, tournaments with prizes, and etc. Weapon’s safety check required for all equipment. Loaner equipment available.

Camping: Camps sites open at 1:30pm on Friday, January 18th. Check out is by 1:30PM Monday, January 21st. A limited number of spaces are available Thursday and Monday night for those who need to come early/stay late, contact Anastasia at battle4thering@gmail.com for arrangements.

Facilities: This site features indoor toilets, working showers, and a washer/dryer for clothes (shower and washer/dryer require quarters, also available at check-in desk).

Activities: BftR V will feature a nightly Dragon's Inn, an indoor Game Room featuring board games, collectible card games (especially MTG), tabletop RPGs, and the like. If you have any decks, boardgames, or one-shots you'd like to run, bring them along. There will also be tournaments, the Bel Bowl, campfire drumming and dancing, and more fun. Contact battle4thering@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Feasts: Friday Evening is potluck night (bring something to eat something); Free meals include Saturday Evening Main Feast; Sunday Morning Brunch; an additional “Dessert Time” is TBA. Bring your own medieval tableware: utensils and bowls/plates for all meals.

The primary goal of Battle for the Ring is to provide an intense and excellent fighting and social experience to our experienced and returning fighters. At the same time, we hope to use Battle for the Ring to introduce new fighters who have never been to a national event, as well as cross-sport fighters who are interested in our method of play, to the national Belegarth community. We are dedicated to creating an enjoyable and educational experience for new fighters, fostering unity and good relations across sports, and ultimately creating a friendly, mutually supportive community through which the sport of Medieval Combat can grow in strength, popularity, and fame.

Here is the photo page from last year's event.

This should give you an idea of the site and the feel of the event, but this year we're gonna make sure everything is bigger, better, and more intense!

Re: Battle for the Ring V! Jan 18-21, 2013 (MLK weekend)

It is my pleasure to announce that I will be hosting the second annual BelBowl! The BelBowl will be an 8 to 10-man tournament (style to be determined at the event) played with the rules of the game Aztec Football. The BelBowl is set to commence on Sunday, January 20 at 1pm on the main fighting field. For those who may not be familiar with the rules of Aztec Football, they are as follows (with slight modification for better gameplay):

• A point is scored when the team on Offense successfully transports a designated member of their team (a.k.a “the ball”) across a goal line (player must be alive)
• The team on Offense loses the match if their designated “ball” is killed
• The player designated as the “ball” is immune to any damage done by a projectile
• A team cannot score a point while on Defense
• The team which is on Defense begins the match on the goal line. The team which is on Offense will begin outside of it
• Each team will have three opportunities to score a point
• At the end of both teams’ three attempts, the team with the most points is the victor. In the event of a tie, the tie will be settled by a standard field battle between the two teams
• The matches will take placed in an enclosed space. Crossing these boundaries will result in death.
• Archery will not be permitted. Use of other projectiles is allowed.
• Armor will be counted
• Teams must have a minimum of 8 members and a maximum of 10. In the event that the competing teams are uneven, the team with the greater number of members will be asked to sit out members to make the teams equal. Teams may switch out players in between matches. This is to encourage smaller and younger groups to participate.
• Each team will designate a figurehead captain who will be ceremonially beheaded in the event of defeat

This year, in addition to hosting the tournament, competing teams will have the opportunity to enter into a Field Procession Competition (a.k.a. Best Field Entrance) before the tournament for the crowds' enjoyment. There will be a panel of five judges (picked by me, PM me if you want to be a judge and what your qualifications are), who will judge the teams' entrance based on categories such as Originality, Unified Appearance, Intimidation Factor, Adherence to Aztec Theme, and Entertainment Value. The team with the best overall field entrance will be given priority entrance/seating to Sunday Night Awards Ceremony, Priority entrance into Saturday feast at the following Battle for the Ring, and will each be given a trinket of some sort which will designate them as the MFPs, the Most Fashionable Players.

I encourage groups to put together their teams as early as possible so that they may prepare for their field entrance.

Awesome, we look forward to seeing you. It's looking like this year will easily break the attendance record we had last year.

Also, if anyone is interested in teaching classes, especially non-com classes during fighting, let me know via PM. We are trying really hard to get some of the society stuff off the ground. Any other ideas are also appreciated.

Campsite & Event Guidelines
We understand that many of you have not been to this site before and perhaps even a few of you have never been to California. With this in mind, we have put together a guide to the campsite and it’s layout including terrain and things you should know while in high desert during the winter. Please read through some key points we have listed here carefully.
Disclaimer: This guide is not definitive and “common sense supersedes all loopholes”.
California: Climate and Terrain – READ THIS
• California is high desert and that means that at night, it gets extraordinarily cold (most times in the mid-forties but often in the thirties as well) so bring warm clothing for sleeping.
• The area where we will be fighting has grass but there is a lot of dirt and dust with small pebbles scattered around so we recommend protective
• We have mountains. Lots and lots of mountains. Cell phones don’t always work (and neither do their associated Wi-Fi). Batteries will drain quickly and GPS may not work. Keep this in mind.
• Speaking of navigational tools, although we live in a technological age, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to pick up an atlas at your local Walmart to use if you are not familiar with the area and your mobile device doesn’t work.
• Check the weather – yes, California is a sunny state, but we have winters too. We just get rain instead of snow.
Campsite General Rules
• Treat the land with respect. Don't litter. Never throw your cigarette butts or bottle caps on the ground.
• Please drive very slowly, Speed limit is 5 mph. I know it’s hard, but this is really important as complaints about our driving and dust can affect us using this site in the future. During the day a lot of families and kids go to the park as well.
• Speaking of cars, please don’t be *. Don't honk your horn on site, don't blare loud music of any type and never park in a way that others can't move their cars. These all ruin the experience of the event and the general mood of people nearby.
• Don't do anything to spook the horses on the nearby trails.
• DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, CUT DOWN ANY LIVING TREES, PLANTS, ETC! What is already on the ground and dead is fair game, but out of respect for nature and the site we’re at please follow this rule. We will have a limited number of bundles of firewood available for purchase at troll. Otherwise there are plenty of local places you can go to purchase firewood or you can go on craigslist and search for people giving away free firewood or selling it for cheap.
• When you depart the event, we implore to please clean up after yourselves. All event staff are volunteers taking time out of their own vacation to work hard and make sure your time is fun and memorable – please don’t pay them back by leaving a mess behind you. It’s rude, lazy and frankly poor etiquette.

Event Reminders
• First stop is troll. Go sign stuff and get your token/parking pass
• EVERYONE under 18 needs to have a notarized waiver if guardian is not present. If a parent or legal guardian is not onsite they also need a chaperone. No waiver, no entry into the event, so I repeat: ALL MINORS need a notarized waiver
• Minors are only allowed to be onsite while their chaperone is present!
• At all public feasts we require those who attend to have utensils, plates, bowls and drinking vessels that are authentic to the time period we all love and portray. Please respect this rule. If you lose yours, don’t have any or cannot pack them due to space a limited supply will be available to purchase at troll OR we have vendors on site who will be selling them for reasonable prices.

Im going to start off by saying I had a great time at the event. However some things did need for improvement. Also, i dont normally do this but I felt I should this time.

Pros:
Awesome time fighting and hanging out with people during nightlife. Fighting was for the most part clean and honorable, weapons check went smoothly overall but some inconsistencies did occur from day to day, and overall it was worth the trip from Iowa. Looking forward to coming out next year.

Cons:
Event staff needs to delegate better, I had the impression of chickens running around with their heads cut off a few times because people weren't sure what they were supposed to do and what needed to be done.

Better site management needed. I was part of Nacho Camp it was quite irritating having people constantly coming and going through camp, walking on our stuff, cutting between our tents and not even hailing camp which is a common courtesy all fighters should be know to do. We've already started planning on our own how to fix this but come on people, you should all know better.

Different fighting field, the field we used was rocky, hard, and turned to dust way too quickly.

And the biggest issue I had was this. I flew out from Iowa as many knew and later learned yet I ended up doing weapons check, heralding, volunteer work, serving feast, etc. This isn't right. This was a Southern California event and there were more than enough of you folk there to do what was to be needed. And I'm not blaming Krow who was in charge of finding volunteers. If people are not willing to give back to the sport and help out in any way they can then you guys suck. If don't want to help out at your premier event and see it grow then why are you even in Belegarth. This sport will only continue to grow as long as we all do our part to make it better.

Overall I had a good time and enjoyed myself but if things are not fixed then you will end up hurting yourself in the future.
I'm de ogre from Eriador who likes picking on pinkies and goblyns.

Hordes mover of people and things.

Do you have questions about monsterdom? Come talk to me, I can help you out.

I'm a nomad, I show up almost anywhere and sometimes without warning.

I organized this event and these are all fair criticisms. We need a lot more local people helping put on this event. Some more pre-planning can help with this, but in the end, we need qualified volunteers on the ground. If anyone wants to start running departments (Site Management, Merchant Row Coordinator, Media Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, ect.) or being more involved with the event (Heralding, Weapon's Check, Site Management), we have positions, and we do need the help. Please send me PM's and we can make the next one better for people who travel to us on THEIR vacation. Even if you are not qualified for some big position, it doesn't hurt to at least tell me your interests now so that I can place you in the correct department later.
