It definitely is good for making minimum blue weapons, though it is fragile and shouldn't be used for heavy blocking.

Take the core. Hit a tree with it solidly. If there is no damage, you're golden. Note: This does not mean that you should gorilla swing it at the tree. Just throw a good, solid shot against the tree.

And don't block Red weapons with it, or you will be out a toy.

One thing I've heard about (but haven't tried myself) is to take two golf shafts, insert one open end into the other, and make a long core for a javelin.

The biggest problem I've had with 'em is their taper. Nearly every sword I've tried using one almost always likes to separate at the tip just because the taper throws off my build.

Provided they pass the test Caleidah suggested above, they make awesome flail hafts.

I used golf shafts to build a couple of Amtgard bats. To combat the taper, I used the adhesive-backed craft foam to build up the tapered section of the golf shaft. It evened off the taper enough that it wasn't an issue and I didn't get the rattling you often see with building fun noodle on the golf shaft.

Amen to the above amt bat solution. Only I used an expanding silicone caulk to deal with the tapering. Step 2 ?. Step 3 profit.

A decent flat blade CAN be built on a tapered shaft without much difficulty. Assuming you use the box and strip method the only extra tool you might need is calipers or dividers. When you build your box layer, use the calipers to measure the core diameter at the tip and where the bottom of your blade will be. Let's assume those numbers are 3/8" and 9/16" with 24" of blade, add these to get 15/16" and lay out a rectangle on your foam with a long ruler 15/16" by 24". At one end of the rectangle come in 3/8" and make a mark. At the opposite end come in 9/16". Connect these marks and cut out the two tapered strips. The wider portion of the box layer is measured and cut the same way after dapping on the previously cut pieces. Cap and cut two blade strips as you normally would that are as wide as the base of the blade. You can either glue the strips centered over the box leaving a slight overhang at the tip, or keep them flush to one of the flats and carefully trip the excess with a long, sharp knife.
