Is vinyl legal for making leather grade armour? Vinyl is much more accessible to me and would make life easier.

It is not legal. Armor must be made from period materials.

I've read the BoW. I was wondering because it allows plastic sports pads as leather grade armour. I have found a tannery close enough to my city, and I do appreciate the answer before I went out and purchased a bunch of vinyl.

No, no, no, no. The plastic doesn't COUNT as armor. If you are going to initiate a grapple, then you are treated as though you are wearing leather armor if you are wearing plastic protective gear. This means you can only grapple another person wearing armor and you may not grapple an unarmored opponent.
To count as armor in the game it must be made of period materials and follow the rest of the rules in the link above for armor.

Gotcha. Makes much more sense to me now, as I always immediately thought armour instead of protective gear. Thank you for helping this armour newb.
