MMA glove suck. They looks like **** and do not have thumb protection. Field hockey gloves just look like stupid robot hands. I'm designing plans for gloves that have padding in all the places mma gloves do, plus a thumb protector. You should be able to build them with scraps and foam from the hobby lobby. I'll post the plans when im done. Im also tryingi to make some nice high quality production models to sell. But I need to look at more thumbs I have a few ideas I'm trying, but I,d like input from you guys on what you want to see in thumb protection. So, any ideas? thank fb

I have always wanted something like this, even bought materials for it, but never had the time to construct it. I currently use hand wraps and "light bag" gloves? These are easily covered with neutral fabric or are neutral colored already, but they offer very little in thumb protection. Once you have put the time in to figure out what they would cost, let us know; I would love to get some if I can afford them.
Thanks!

Something like your samurai glove would be cool, but with padding underneath. A stiff piece for the top bone of the thumb, with a pad under so the force is reduced and spread out. Like an Samurai MMA glove.

Check it FB. I've been using Skeith's SCA clamshells for fighting red, and I love them. Build some of those. Quick and cheap for you. The other alternative is doing what I did and make a sort of hybrid. I sewed fabric on top of leather on top of a regular glove to make a sort of pocket bring MMA glove. Check out my Facebook for pictures, and I think I have a thread here as well. It's a huge **** pain in the *, but it looks so cool and it rad protection.

http://s5.photobucket.com/albums/y170/Varadin/Tardy/I made these up last year for the same purpose fork. Padding is a simple 1/4th thick yoga mat. The rest of it is unhardened saddle skirting. Worked great with a hemp stitch(covered in yellow tape) between the floating fingers and the base but eventually it rotted out from fighting in the rain. Im making a new version that im replacing the hemp with a piece of garment leather. Eventually i plan on making the ultimate version built off a dearskin glove. I just dont have the time for sewing them right now. http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2009/ ... Lynfir.jpgA similar pair to what i plan on making. Not bad but the chick who makes them is in Europe somewhere and im not dealing with that hassle.

Totally high when I posted that, sorry duder. What are you most confused about? Skeith has some clamshell gauntlets he uses in SCA that are amazing hand protection. Easily done with leather and I'm sure you could find a pattern for them. I made my own version of an MMA glove hybrid with leather and cloth. It took forever falls apart on me, but looks good and is great protection. That chick's leather gloves are amazing though. Love em'. If you're going this kind of route I'd say use armor grade leather. Foam breaks down and needs to be replaced.

http://i.ebayimg.com/07/!B8MdDJQEWk~$(KGrHqF,!l8Ey+jC5GUrBM2(6MBvOg~~0_35.JPGI've used these for both inside my SCA guantlets and I wear them when I fight bele. They have held up almost 2 years now I think and work well. The thumb protection is good and you could put leather over them to make them look more guantlet like. Just an idea. They are not huge like field hockey gloves and have more protection without a huge fist padding like MMA gloves. All around good low profile glove with great protection.

Extra info: The pattern is from the Århus-vikings named Ask, but is used by many many steel-viking fighters in Europe. I didn't do the inner gloves, they're replacable cheap leather gloves you'll find at your local garden supplies store.

I posted these a while ago, and since then, they have been dyed and given a stab foam lining, and are absolutely amazing for preventing thumb injury. Granted, they aren't made from scrap foam and old MMA gloves (scrap leather, hinged rivets, and old welding gauntlets), but its a step in the right direction. I got the design from a concept sketch for Berserk!. Next up, after a new fighting mask, is a fingered gauntlet for the right hand.

The dual rivets were intentional (and fixed, not hinged), because the nastiest hand injuries I've received have been from a weapon crunching the thumb back to the wrist, which the thumb guard, and the dual steel rivets prevent.
Then again, I don't move my thumb on my left hand on too many axis, and my right hand is usually protected by my weapon's cross guard, so I honestly don't know if a single rivet would work well or not- I'm eager to find out~!

The padding/protection on those revival.us gloves is nowhere near what you'd want for bel. They're mostly meant for SCA rapier, where they don't blast each other in the hands. Thrusting-only games have different safety issues than ours.

Calarn, That pattern I've used in the past and havent really been fond of...I made some demi gauntlets that I sized enough for MMA gloves to wear underneath. not sure if that will help or not but the pattern is easy enough

First Attempt at Demi Gauntlets..this time around I used those cap rivets next time I'll use aluminum or copper rivets..I'm not super hard on equipment (armor) just swords and shields..so the cap rivets have been doing a satisfactory job, your mileage of course will vary.

I'd recommend copper rivets. The caps are for decoration not fighting.

Thorpe's made kind of a lot of stuff. He knows what's up.
Quick-rivets work fine for a lot of what we do. All of my armor is made with them, and I've had to replace maybe 8 with copper in a couple years of use. Copper #9's are frankly overkill for Bel armor in most situations.

I absolutely disagree. Cap rivets are ****. You should never have to replace a rivet. Copper rivets last forever. I use the #12(?smaller than 9's).on everything. there is no such thing as overkill when I make something for you to use. fb

Personal preference, I guess. Aside from **** on the opposing point of view for no reason, nothing you posted is untrue, Fork. Copper rivets are awesome, last forever, etc. Just also kind of a pain in the *, compared to quick-rivets.

My opinion is based on the hundreds of those rivets I've had to replace fir people over the years at events. I love to help people, but holy ****. When your shoulder falls off halfway through chaos war, I will gladly fix it for you, but I,ll also tell you what I think of your cheap * rivets and I,ll replace em with good copper. fb

I didnt have any copper rivets at the time (or the tools at the time to use said rivets had I had them with me) and it was my first attempt at a demi gauntlet. It was a learning experience. I spend an aweful lot of time and money re-inventing the wheel on some of my projects lol. going forward I agree I'd use a different rivet, I'll likely use Aluminum type rivets that I have in my plate mail...unless in my testing they dont work out. Some of my SCA armor.

Fork,
I made a leather gauntlet from a modified SCA clamshell plan... it worked really well except for the reduced dexterity and one big gaping problem: You could still get hit on the end of the thumb, as when you punch block and your thumb is sticking out perpendicular to the handle.
If you can figure out how to make a gauntlet that protects the end of the thumb while still maintaining thumb dexterity you'll have a taker right here.

Slagar I think the difference of opinion you and Fork are having here is based on the fact that he sells armor. Ive used pop rivets on **** ive made for myself. However if I sell something to someone I want it to be of the highest quality AND need to rarely/never need maintenance and you achieve this by using rivets that the leather will eventually start to rot around leaving the rivet still intact.

I just fractured my thumb - took a hard spear hit to the tip, and busted the bone above the last knuckle. If you could figure out a gauntlet design that would keep that from happening again, I'd definitely buy a pair.

I hate to be one to bring up an old post, especially one as old as this, but I'm really curious as to whether anything came of this. I've been using a lacrosse glove for years now, and I hate how ugly and bulky it is, but I haven't come across anything that kept my hand as safe. I would LOVE something more low-profile and period, but I'm not willing to sacrifice my hand for that. Has the mighty Forkbeard conjured a solution to my (and surely many others') problem?

MMA gloves are fine if you alter them a little bit. Just gotta add some Zazz to it.

I use these and they are the best gloves I've used to date; better then MMA for coverage/looks, better then LAX for looks/lopro and better then like, cycle gloves. I highly recommended these.
