durable period footwear?

Postby Derokar » Mon Jan 27, 2014 5:16 am

any recommendations for garb worthy footwear (preferably boots, Viking, Celt or barbarian looking boots)? I've looked but all the stuff I find has terrible reviews saying they are not ment for heavy use outdoors. Fighting definatly requires good footwear!

My first pair of these wore out due to complications with wearing them during a full out storm in which I had to move my camp. Otherwise they are great and many people I know wear them.

thank you very much, they are quite expensive though. Are they actually worth it?

You can also find some neutral colored boots or shoes at a second-hand store to get you by, and cover them with some leather or neutral colored spats (e.g.: these.

As well, considering that they are period leather footwear, $50-$100 isn't a bad price; there are athletic shoes that cost similarly, or more.

While some of these can seem inordinately expensive, think of them a long-term investment with a high initial cost. Yes, paying $300 for a pair of shoes up front is a lot but if you break it down in terms of how long they will last, it's not as bad. For example, if the $300 pair of shoes lasts you 5 fighting seasons, that ends up being $60 a year and $5 a month. If you're able to get them to last at least 10 fighting seasons (not unrealistic if you care for them), that ends up being $30 a year and only $2.50 a month.

I have a pair of medieval-ish boots that I paid $210 for but they've lasted at least eight fighting seasons now. That breaks down to $26.25 a year and about $2.19 a month.

That is a very good point. While we are on the subject of period garb, I'm also looking for a decent cloak. Would you happen to know where to pick one of those up as well?

As I see it, you have a couple of options. One is to invest in some high-quality fabric to make your cloak and sew it yourself/commission it. Just keep in mind that the fabric will not be cheap especially if you get nice wool for it and you will need several yards of it to give it the proper silhouette. The other option is to buy one, perhaps from http://garbtheworld.com/items/g0019.shtml or an Etsy vendor that makes cloaks.

I wear

http://www.vikingleathercrafts.com/viki ... boots.html

which aren't expensive at all, and are rather comfy (i suggest getting the vibram sole for a bit of grip). And because of the look i go for work well. It really depends on what you want to look like, vikings have simple cheap footwear... 14th century.. not so much.

I've used those same ones for a while now.

I'm pretty tempted to try these, though, which appear to be the same but with a better heel:
