Scale armor question

Would it be okay to make scale armor using metal dog tags as blanks? Has anyone done this before, I currently do not have any so I am unaware if they conform the the penny round rule, and I would like to make sure before I order any
It's actually spelled Caiman now as I am less of an idiot than when I originally made my name (it was Kayman before that... ew).
