Classes at Octoberfest

I will be teaching three classes geared towards new fighters. Unless there are other activities going on, they will tentatively be near the pavillion. Classes will be a mixture of instruction and drills and will probably last no longer than one hour each.

1) Basics of offensive shield work--Thursday, after weapons check
Recommended gear: shield and weapon

Topics to be covered:
----How to deliver and receive a shield bash
----How to check
----Shield punching
----Shield hooking
----Counters to shield attacks

2) Basic florentine--Thursday, 4 PM.
Recommended gear: two weapons, preferably not flails. For the record, I'm not biased against flails. Since this class is geared towards new fighters, it's been my experience that it's far easier to learn defense with a sword or bat than with a flail.

Topics to be covered:
----Stances
----Defense
----Footwork
----Joys of two weapons
----Approaches
----Combinations

3) Basic archery--Friday, after weapons check
Recommended gear: bow and at least two arrows

Topics to be covered:
----Safety
----Calling your shots
----Suggested equipment
----Proper form
----Hitting what you're aiming at
----Target priorities
----Hitting a moving target

If there are any other topics on these subjects that you would like to be covered, please let me know. Also, if you are not able to attend one of these sessions, please PM me or find me at the event. I will be more than happy to set up other sessions. This will be cross-posted in the fighter development forum.

I'd be interested in a polearms class from Clan of the Hydra.

Topics could include: working with a shieldman, working in a line, open field tactics, stances, dodging arrows, shielding (back, shoulder, buckler), body mechanics, stuff like that.

hey get off my nuts... lol, just joking around here.

i think we could make that happen. i will talk with some of the experienced hydra pole people. usually chicken, falcor and physic could make it happen and be very effective. they have good and different ideas giving a few ways to handle each of the issues that come up when spearing, and glaiving.

I'm trying to bring a group of new fighters from Numenor to OcFest, but due to classes, we won't be leaving until Friday afternoon. Is it possible to have a shortened version of these classes on Saturday? I think they could really gain from this and make the event a great experience for them.

Not a problem. My only concern is that I don't want to take away from them experiencing the biggest battles (I'm guessing at least 300-400 people) of the year. We may be able to fit in one class Friday depending on what time they get to the site and then look to getting the other two out of the way early Saturday.

Of course. They need to get their first thrill of large scale fighting. I'm going to talk to the newbies this coming practice and get a head count for the caravan. I'll mention your classes and try to get to Fest while there's still daylight on Friday. I'll let you know which classes (hopefully all of them) they are interested in.

Great classes, I will definitely attend.

Physic ran a spear class at Spring Wars that was very informative. I think it would be great to have it again, preferably on a different day or time from Sir Kyrian's classes. I'll ask him about it.

I would go to that for sure. I just got my spear last year and I haven't had a chance to use it tons (we don't always have a big enough turnout to do big battles)

I'd like to apologize to everyone for not being able to conduct the archery class. With the lousy weather on Friday, I had hoped to hold the class on Saturday but ended up having several obligations that prevented me from doing so. If you're interested, I can post my training notes in this forum.

Thanks Kyrian for the awesome class, I really enjoyed it.

Don't know when the flo one was, but I was busy keeping our fire going so we didn't die :axed:.

Kyrian, I would very much appreciate your insight into archery and training. If you could post them i would be most grateful.

I was disappointed that the classes didn't end up happening, but I understand given the circumstances.

Thanks a ton.
