I have two. They're nothing fancy, but they're different enough, maybe, to be worth sharing. Not a single rivet used in either of them - just stitching with artificial sinew.

The first one posted was my attempt at a mix between this helmet and the helmet in this image. Also, check out this link for a better copy of the design on the helmet from Children of Hurin.

Old photos of me posing are silly.

Love that first one! Sadly, I myself have not made a helm, but have several drawings of some...

Yeah. My helms are forged with paper, graphite, and ink. I'd end up tearing my hair out if I tried to make some of the helms I've designed on paper.

How long it took was never an issue -- a few hours maybe? Stitching it up took a while, I remember. And dying it, and cutting it. And designing it. And carving the side of it.

But it was fun, and done in fits and starts. Do which I had designed them a little better.

I like helms, but I never wear these. Too awkward to fight in, I want to be able to move and see and react better than they allow me too. And I don't get shot in the face terribly often.

There's way better helms out there than what I've got.

Here is mine.

Its an uruk helm, so i was going for that beat up, torn up look.

And tusks of course.

Its a form function thing. Straps to the head like a mask, which makes it very easy to fight in, and doesn't block my vision at all. The braids on it get switched out for a nice light wig hair for fighting. Braids are just for show and way too heavy to be practical. Open on the front for breathing, and open on the sides so i can hear out of it. I used it at OKfest and it worked quite nicely.

Armor-legal face plate. 13oz hardened, water/glue formed leather with ballistic glass lenses...
Image
Here's an old pic of me wearing it...
Image
And this is the helm I am about 90% done with (I'll post more pics when I'm done). Imagine on it a visor, faceplate, and fully painted and dyed.

That face plate is absolutely amazing. How is visibility with the lenses?
The helmet looks awesome as well.

Thank you!
The visibility is actually rather good- it doesn't cut out perripheral vision at all- the only downside is that because of the padding around the ocular orb (I don't really want a lens breaking off and sliding into my eye if a red hits me in the face), the goggle is well insulated- when i work up a sweat, it fogs up. I drilled holes into the lenses to help, but I ultimately ditched the face plate as far as combat goes (great costume piece though!)
The face plate I am putting on the helm will not have that problem~!

A good way around the fogging problem is adding closed cell foam under the eyes so it sits on your face above your nose. Keep the air from getting up to the eyes and you won't have a fogging problem. Just make sure the bottom of the mask has somewhere for the air to escape otherwise your going to get light headed quickly.

Imperial Gallic "G" knock off from Red Sky Trader- $41.95 plus shipping.

Had to use double sided carpet tape with thin leather to cover up the non-penny round edges/corners around the ear protection, visor welds, and brow ridge - but if done with care it can look bad *.

Also, you need to either weld or add an extra rivet to the brow ridge to keep it from being a finger trapping hazard. I use a shoe lace cut in half, duck taped to the inside of the cheek guards under my padding for a chin strap. Again, do it right and you're gold.

That isnt a full helm. It has an open face. Things like my sca helm are a full metal helm

Truth. And the hinges make it somewhat less than rigid, I'd argue.

It has come up, time and time again. General majority consensus (with a few exceptions) is that full helm = with face.

This is my new helm that I wore for the first time to WPO. Most notable is the elastically movable mandible. As I talk/shout/eat an arrow out of mid-air the mandible articulates and moves but returns to a closed position.

The funny thing about the pic that Magnus uses as his avatar, is that for the longest time, I thought that he was holding up his thumb and forefinger, like saying, "you have this little of a chance to survive this," or something equivalently bad *. It wasn't until something like a month ago when someone blew the pic up for me that he was doing the whole metal salute thing.
I've been idly working away at my helm, and here is the under plate and eye pieces so far~

I've been posting more pics on another thread, so I feel a little sheepish posting here again, but meh.
And yeah- I agree that presently, it looks like a fly's head, or a member of the Foot clan from the 1990 Ninja Turtle movie. :P

I've never had the pleasure of seeing Forkbeard's helm up close-
Simply amazing, though that point's probably been driven home countless times!
The gold tooth makes me wonder how brutal Uruk-Hai dentistry must be.
There- the face plate is complete!
Image
It's kinda hard to see from this angle, but the thing burned and burnished onto the front is supposed to be a zweilhander.
I still entertain the whole Doppelsöldner notion from time to time...

Damnit Sieg. That's incredible. Your work is just. Unbelievably good.

And I'm a little miffed that someone beat me to the plague-doctor aesthetic. Play that up, dude.

Thanks everyone! I wish I had more time and resources to do this more often, but then again, who doesn't?
I've never seen "Spaceballs" but I think I get the sentiment. Thanks!

I was originally going to go for a longer, outward facing snoot resembling a plague doctor, but thinking ahead, realized that it wasn't such a great idea.
It would add another few inches to the face, and if someone struck the end of it, I'd imagine the entire mask might torque right off my face.
That, and if someone had the balls to try to grapple me, a large beak would be a sort of an unsafe way to get him off me (though amusing!).
In the end, the "beak" rises maybe an inch off of the lower plate, as to not obstruct the airways.
I might make another one that is actually a plague doctor mask (with a beak stuffed with incense, of course), if I ever take up long term medic or herald duties.
Or just sell it.
