(Big Lots also carries dense open cell workspace floor mats with interlocking taps...could be good structural foam)

Any yoga mat will do. I picked mine up from target. Walmart sells it. One layer does it for me over a properly muffined core, you know, capping the tip of the core with bit of foam? Don't make a stab tip without it? Do your box, your layers, then over the top a strip of yoga map, sap the bottom, strapping tap at the edges down a few inches of the sword length, like 6. Duct tape over that. Boom. Never had one fail an event. They'll sheer off though over time. But all do.

we seem to like the blue cell and dense open cell foam. its cheap and though it /can/ break down faster we havent had much problems /as of yet/. beside my guys seem to think they need to stab through you at times so its not always a bad idea for us lol. given tiem well prolly change it but as for now thats my input.

life guard tubes are a great source, but can be expensive.

Try looking at your local community pool and asking the boss if you can have them when they throw theirs away after they break down or they get a new budget.

I was able to get one once, but they insisted for liability purposes that they had to cut it in half so that I couldn't use it as it was intended and then sue them if I failed rescuing anyone. Didn't bother me one bit.

It's really a Pilates-thickness mat, not a traditional yoga mat. But it does the * job, whatever you call it.

For these yoga mats, are you just putting one layer of that yoga mat on and then putting a blade fry over it? I feel like it wouldn't change how stabbing with just blue camp foam would feel... But I could be very wrong.

Yoga mat is a pretty poor blanket term for this product, because some "yoga mats" are that thin, 3-4 mm textured stuff that looks like the non-slip stuff you put under a rug on hardwood floors.

That's not what you want. You want one of the higher quality ones made out of the fine-celled, almost rubbery feeling medium density foam called "ensolite". This stuff is usually a little less than .5" thick when used in yoga/exercise mats and sleeping pads. It makes great stabbing tips. Depending on the particular thickness you get you may well need two layers.

so .. we changed out tips to yoga mat and got complaints from a dag group[ that they are to hard. im at a loss. usually we do the end cap then 2-3 layers of yoga them a top of blue cell. what am i doing wrong? advice is greatly appreciated.

That had been our experience w/ a Dag group several years ago because they were new and their leader actually came from back east. In short order they became hard hitting and now love them some yoga mat as well. I think the issue isn't the game they're from, rather who they're getting their standards from - but perhaps that is a game issue?

At any rate, 1 layer of yoga should probably pass for a blue sword, and two layers on big weapons.

Stabs will never feel nice. It's an unnatural occurrence for a person to be stabbed. All that's required is that they're safe. For some, the line is blurred between safe/dangerous and comfy/temporary discomfort.

I play Dag up and down the east coast, and I haven't had one of my yoga mat tips (2 layers, .75") fail in the last three years. Before that, however, nobody had encountered them and there was a lot of resistance, and I wouldn't be surprised if there were still a few pockets in Dag where the newer stab tech hasn't caught on. Assuming Accursed was building his tips properly, I'd guess it was just a regional archaism.

The people who complain about otherwise passing marine foam(yoga mat foam) tips are the ones who are wrong. They are behind the times and need to get it together.

just some thoughts, those life gaurd floats are always on sale in august and september, close out type stuff, i got 4 for 5$ each a few years ago.

also there is a good foam in the mma glove combo kits. everlast brand, the punching hand pad mats, inside is some nice stuff. comes with jump rope, gloves, and then the hand pads.

As a Lifeguard instructor, I'd recommend NOT using used life guard tubes. Those things take a ton of beatings and I don't think the foam would be in the best of shape. Otherwise, I'd recommend Gold's Gym yoga (pilates) mat. The only troubles that I've had with them is if you don't do it right, they flex really badly. Note that I defined my own problem there.

That's why he said "(mostly)", and I'll stand by using it for stab tips. You do have to select where you're cutting it from, but a great percentage of the foam in the free tubes our Realm got access to our first year was perfectly fine.

If you can buy it on the cheap and unused, even better.
