Holes in Sheilds?

So i'm sure somewhere deep within the forums there is a topic about this but i don't even know where to start. This idea came to me recently while reading something on the boards and then i saw a picture and it all clicked... long story short BoW does not say a sheild cannot have whole ( ie to shoot arrows threw or green things threw) the only issue i can come up with it is entanglement issues, i also fully understand safety (ie a grapple arm gets stuck *SNAP* ) but if hole is small or larger or even a mass of 1" or .5" holes, threw out the shield, would that be legal, thank you for your time (and yes i know i'm an idiot for even thinking of this, and no i don't plan on making anything like this yet)

If there was NO entangling issue (fingers, man), it didn't fail flex (all those holes are going to weaken the structure) and it passed other check, it'd be OK. However, your big issue is going to be catching fingers. At check, I'd honestly take one look at it and say no, because I like to punch, slap, shove, etc on shields, and I know that other people do as well.

You would NOT put holes in a sheild in real life. It would get you killed. Don't be stupid.

there are some dagorhir guys here in Iowa who make wood core shields and then drill a bunch of holes in it and then cover with foam.

perhaps its legal in dag or there some sort of method to their madness..but if you want a light but sturdy shield just get a foam shield and dap a layer of sturdy mc foam on it. Or just get a toughened shield from warlord sports

Idea for this is wind resistance, (like foam needs it), and what about a cover wouldn't that make the holes now un-entanglable ( yes covers can come off i am aware of this), just food for thought all input is helpful thank you

Wait, wait, wait...what? Are you complaining about wind resistance? If so, you need to eat a steak and put on some beef if a shield is causing you that much issue.

The cover would deal with the entangling issue, yes. If you want a light shield, get a solid foam shield. Fitz Caliston (and others) sell shield blanks that weigh practically nothing.

thanks! that info is helpful completely.... and don't get me started about steak and i was bull **** the wind thing xD, i generally use a retarded heavy wood strap w/ back attachment, the only thing i'd really use a hole for is for my archer to "shoot threw" the shield but entanglement issues apply then, correct

I feel like you'd be better off arching/spearing around a shield anyway, rather than through one. Trying to spear through a hole in a shield would limit your attack options like crazy.

i think the closest you could get to effective ( still pushing it) is putting a half circle in a shield side to put a jav through kinda like the Spartans would. again thats pushing it but thats all i could think of for effective.

Also not a good idea, any time I've come up against a shield with some sort of weird divot cut out, like your example for javies, all I see is a new place to put more sword and makes some murder.

You just have to stop posting. It'll die on its own eventually.

Spartans didn't use Diplyon shields(the ones with the cutouts). Other greeks did though. Here is a link to a thread from a while back about them viewtopic.php?f=4&t=34076

Arathin, can you put a pic of the shield in question?
