One of the things I love about Bel events is that it's not one-dimensional. Sure, there's a ton of awesome fighting and general ass-kickery, but when there's time between fighting or feasting or sin nights, what do you like to do to pass the time?
I find I enjoy a few things. Obviously that's a good time to make weapons. I may not be the world's greatest foamsmith, but I truly enjoy doing it sometimes. I also really like to play music on the side-- I have an ocarina that I can't really play but bring anyway (need to get me a harp I can bring along someday). During the events at which I have a functional laptop, I love to write in the downtime-- I find the atmosphere inspires me.
A couple years ago at Spring Wars, I camped right across the way from Fergus of the Black Company. My wife and I hailed their camp and ended up dining with them. We found they like to chop their own firewood and then separate the bark from the logs, burning the wood and using the bark as plates for their meat. Very interesting, and very cool.
This year at Spring Wars, I'll be blending one of my new hobbies into the mix-- making tea. Boiling the water over fire and then steeping the looseleaf tea is something I've come to enjoy.
How about you guys? What do you do in your camp (other than drink yourself stupid)?
