My local Joans is closing and everything and I mean everything is 60-80 percent off in the store. I bought 10 yards of duck cloth and a few yards of patterend silk for the liner. (for pocket brig and whatever else I can think to have my Grandma help me make) for like $45. Anyway I plan on making some colder weather garb with the duck cloth of an outer layer but I also need to make some regular garb so what fabric would you recommend?

I sometimes wear a linen shirt...and it is really nice. My gambeson is simple cotton though.

I really don't know what cold weather is (Florida Realm and I don't do events north of TN); but I just can't see duck/trigger fabric retaining heat for cold weather use...

I have two pairs of haks out of trigger and a pair of drawstring pants out of it.

I really wouldn't make pants out of duck cloth, that's going to be uncomfortable as hell. Look for some heavy linen blends.

I like linen and/or worsted wool for * near everything. In Jo-Ann's, go to the "Suiting" section and check the labels on each roll until you find smooth fabric with a really awesome drape that says, "100% wool" on the bolt. That's the good stuff for pants, among other things. I want to make a surcoat out of some soon and I have a tunic made of the same stuff that works great in all weathers.

Oh, and I don't think Jo-Ann's makes it a habit to carry real silk. Unless you're certain, what you got was probably polyester. That doesn't make it bad, though, especially for lining things that are going to be worn over other clothes.

I like Trigger- as stated above- it's tough, durable and last a long time. Ranges from $4.99 to $10.99 a yard. I get it at Handcocks. seems they have something that is a litle cheape and almost the same thing.

Trigger isn't around anymore. Its now called Target. Champion is the same thing too.

Joanns carries Champion.

Trigger/Duck Cloth has horrible heat retention. It makes for an awesome durable shell layer (think construction clothing), but needs to be backed or lined with something that will retain heat, preferably a wool.

Twill is what I use, its affordable and comes in wonderful colours and is cotton so its very close to historical correct!

Joann's Trigger is called a Traget Bottomweight now. I use it for pretty much all my garb and weapon covers. Linen is also amazing, especially for tunics.

SALE on 7.1 oz linen. This ish is heavy heavy for linen and I've got a ballin' pair of flowy haks made with a full three yards of the stuff. Gooooooood fooooor paaaaants.

My Hakama are 5 yrds per leg, 10 yrds total. If you dont have at least 3 yrds per leg, they aren't Haks, they are baggy pants.

PS: If you're using 39" selvege fabric, MAYBE. I use 59", sucka.

Go for linens. linen or monk's weave is always a good idea for multi weather, base clothing. like everyone said, trigger (target) is great too. Wool is always a great choice for cold weather. get a material of double brushed flanel (I think that's what it's called.) that stuff is great for cool weather and wares nicely.

Sorry, I guess the pattern I used was for a really big guy (though I still love them.) Traditionally Hakama are 4X the waist size of the person to wear them, before pleating. So if you are a 36" waist, you should have 4 yrds total, or 2 per leg. I suppose my estimate was off a bit, but it was not an attempt to troll. Just trying to be informational, no offense ment.
