War of Reckoning IV - Feb 22 - 24 2013

As a show of good will towards our brethren of Dagorhir, in the spirit of reconciliation, An Tir Dearg will honor weapons built to Dagorhir Manual of Arms specs without modification during weapon check.

It is our hope that you'll still want to lighten those horrible javelins though :P

Who: An Tir Dearg
What: Weekend camping event
When: 0800 Friday, Feb 22nd - 12 Noon Sunday, Feb 24th, 2013
Where: 1001 Wonder Ln in Leeds, UT
Cost: Prereg: $15, Troll: $20. Children <16: Free. No Single Day Fee.

It is with great pleasure that I announce the newest installment of the War of Reckoning which I am proud to say will return to a CAMPING EVENT on private land! The land owner is an uncle to one of our members and is also picking up fighting himself. He's a really cool guy who owns his own shooting range on site, and he fully understands what we do and how we enjoy ourselves after a hard day of fighting. The site is five acres of mixed farm land, woods, and desert scrub brush. We'll have about three prime acres on which to camp and fight. For reference, one acre is about the size of a football field.

ATD wishes to help you all enjoy your vacation as much as possible. We realize that you all are spending quite a bit of money and PTO to come down and swing sticks with us, and we gratefully acknowledge your sacrifice to grace us with your presence. We also have done some serious thinking about how traditionally weekend events are two days of driving sandwiching a cramped day of fighting. It's what we've come to expect out here in the wild west, but it's not necessarily as much fun as it could be. Therefore, in order to afford you the opportunity to get the most out of your vacation, we are going to open our event site at 0800 on Friday to allow for early arrival, relaxation, and fighting by all of our guests. Not only that, but we are going to spread some of our other goings-on into Friday as well.

Now, before you get upset or say we don't need other "goings-on", check the schedule of events and realize that our goal is to make this greater than just the typical weekend event. We want you to come early and stay late if you can because we want you to have more time to be around your friends doing the things you love by increasing how far your Troll cost goes. Does this mean some folks will have to pick and choose which events to participate in? On one hand, yes if you can't or won't show up on Friday, and we extend our condolences and wish you different fortune next year. On the other hand, we wish to maximize your enjoyment by giving you the opportunities to participate or not in special tournaments with some truly kick-ass prizes while at the same time not compromising your body and sacrificing time spent in large battles. After all, large battles are the point of events, and we won't be skimping on them!

Here is a map to the site.

Directions:
    Coming South on I-15
  • I-15 SB to Exit 23
  • Turn Right on Silver Reef Dr from the Off Ramp
  • Turn Immediate Right on Wonder Ln
  • Follow short distance until end of road. Loptr approved signage will be up.

    Coming North on I-15
  • I-15 NB to Exit 22
  • Merge onto Main St (veer left)
  • Go through town (keep the speeds low!) and turn Left on Silver Reef Dr
  • Go under the freeway and make a right on Wonder Ln
  • Follow short distance until he end of road. Loptr approved signage will be up.

Pre Registration:
ATD is excited to offer three benefits for prereg this year. Firstly, you will receive $5 off of the weekend adult Troll admission cost. Secondly, each family (any number) or specified group of four people (since that's about how many fit packed in a little car) who prereg will receive a free bundle of fire wood upon arrival. Lastly, all attendees who prereg will move to the front of the feast line, directly behind the winners of the "Best Garbed Unit" contest.

Unfortunately, we do not have Pay Pal established for our Realm. Prereg payments can instead be mailed to:

Matt Sevald
ATTN: WoR IV
445 W River Willow Ln
Washington, UT
84780

Make sure to include your real name and fighting name, as well as how many people you're paying for. A phone number would also be convenient so I can call and let you know that we've received your money, but I can also hit you up on the Bel Boards with your fighter name. All prereg payments must be postmarked no later than Saturday, February 9th, 2013.

Garb Enforcement:
And now for the ugly stuff. Minimum garb regulations per the Book of War will be enforced on the field, on the sidelines, at main fire, and in the feast line / immediate feasting area for all attendees. Special considerations will be allowed for very young children who are throwing tanturms over their clothes. I've been there and sympathize. Wear whatever you want in your camp, but garb is much appreciated.

Baseball caps and obviously modern style hats will not be allowed in the garb areas. Sunglasses will be allowed so long as they are neutral to your garb. Plain t-shirts and wife-beaters as a stand alone are not garb, and camouflage/obnoxious/unnatural (neon) colors will not be allowed. The garb coloration rule applies to weapon covers as well. Modern logos and designs must be covered. Our rule of thumb when making these decisions is that your garb should be pleasing to the eye. Any violations are assumed to be accidental and we will pull that individual aside and have a private reminder. A refusal to comply will result in removing the individual from the garb-mandated areas. Further disruption will result in removal of the individual from the event. Period drinking vessels are required on the entire site for adults - even in your own camp. Underage children (as in minor/waiverless and not fighting) and babies are exempt.

We're not expecting this sort of thing to happen, but we've got it written out now in case it does.

I am really looking forward to seeing so many of you again, especially after my own abyssmal event attendance this past year. Any questions, you know how to get a hold of me, and let's kick off the new year (after BftR) right!

Finalized Site Map
The final map is in and the astute observer will notice that this one is different from the last. After much prep and debate we believe this will be the ultimate set up for everyone.

Order of Business and Map Legend
When you arrive, your first stop will be the Troll Gate (1). Get there by driving up the road and around the roundabout (2) where you can unload your stuff, sign waivers, and pay troll - checking in much like a hotel. Troll must be completed before you can access the site.

When finished, go park your car (3) or truck (4) and return to set up your camp in either the Loud Camp (6) or Quiet Camp (7). If you have a trailer, you will be permitted to enter the site and park in our designated trailer parking (5).

Weapon Check (1) will also be completed upon arrival at the Troll Gate. Leave all weapons at Troll to ensure proper and speedy checking while you are setting up your camp. Any failed weapons will be held until the end of the event unless the owner intends to repair them. All passing weapons will be given an event sticker which will be checked before battles begin. Any weapons being repaired must have these stickers in order to be used. Violation will result in a voluntary surrender of the weapon or voluntary removal of fighter from the field for the entire day. Failure to choose either option will result in mandatory removal from the site.

All camp areas are designated as non-garb mandatory, however period drinking vessels are required. Our fighting field (8), archery tournament field (9), and feast area (10) - which will be marked - are garb mandatory areas.

Please stay away from the south/southwest end of the property next to the neighbor's house. She's cool with us being there and we'd like to respect her as much as possible. No camping is allowed outside approved areas.

Image

Our permitted use area is bounded by the yellow lines on the map, and fences in real life. It is massive and will serve all of our needs and then some. At the request of our gracious land owners, there is to be zero trespassing in any off limits areas which are marked in red on the map and will be marked with signs at the site. If you're caught in the forbidden areas you will be asked to leave the event. Rule Zero: If you're not on the road with your car and you're not on the fighting field, you're wrong.

Speaking of cars, our approved parking area is on the shoulders of the hardball road accessing the site. It is a municipal road and dead-ends into the site property, which means the owners will require access to it for their personal needs. We will also require use of the road for port-a-john deployment/retrieval, feast, God forbid an ambulance, and of course your own ability to come and go as you please should the need or desire to arise. No one wants a ticket or to be towed, so I don't forsee any problems here. We believe nose-in or rear-in parking will enable the most number of cars to fit without going down in front of the neighbor's property and causing them to start peeking out the windows or getting out the measuring tape to ensure we're not .00000000001 inches over their property. I have no clue what kinds of people they are, but I work for the police department and deal with nosy, whiny folks on a daily basis, so nothing surprises me. Of course, it is a public road, so parking on the shoulder is legal and therefore is an option should our numbers be so huge as to need extra parking.

Fires are only allowed in the 1/4 or 1/2 55 gallon drums that are provided on site. We will place them as we think will allow for spacious, yet neighborly camping among friends, but please feel free to move to suit your needs. Please remember, no cans or anything non-combustible are allowed in the burn barrels. We will have to clean these out after the event.

Vendors:
Vendors of all sorts are welcome at War of Reckoning without fee. If you so wish, you will be allowed to set up your own booth/stand in an area we will designate as Merchant Street. If that's too much of a commitment, please feel free to hawk your wares out of your vehicle/tent or go camp to camp.

One of our Realm members is a blacksmith and leather worker and and has forged swords, knives, jewelry, and even feast gear in the past. He will have a small amount of drawstring purses, leather pouches, wrought iron feast ware, and unhardened bracers for sale (pics to follow), but if you are interested in anything specific, please send Bear a PM over on our Realm's forum.

Ammenities:
There is a small grocery store in Leeds, but the most easily accessible Walmart is down at Exit 10 in Washington. You can see it at the southeast corner next to the Home Depot. If you're not a fan of Wally World, there's an Albertson's grocery store just across the street on the southwest corner. Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to get there from site. If you're hungry before feast and aren't brown bagging it, restaurants near the Walmart include Burger King, Dominos, Don Pedros, El Pollo Loco, Hungry Howies, In N Out, Jack in the Box, Little Caesar's, Mcdonalds, Port of Subs, Red Robin, and Sonic. Lots more down at exit 8 in St. George. The only things north of the event site are in Cedar City at about Exit 55.

We'll have port-a-johns and a dumpster, but no showers on site

Fires must be kept in the provided 1/4 cut 55 gallon metal drums. There are about 80 available, so if you want to camp away from one of the pre-set ones, just let us know and we'll get one for you. No metal cans are allowed to be burned in the fire pits.

New! Assassination Game:
This is a non-combative game, played via communication, and is intended to create an opportunity to meet others of our sport outside of our close groups of friends. Participants pay $1.00 when registering at Troll and will receive the name of their target. They must seek out that person over the course of the event in the spirit of getting to meet and know others in the encampment. When they meet that person, they can attempt to "assassinate" them by announcing what they're doing, and if successful, they collect any targets in the victim's possession.

However, any player may also pay $2.00 at time of registration to get a one-time use doppelganger (declared at time of registration) which will serve as a dummy. Players assassinating a doppelganger are foiled in their attempt and are they, themselves assassinated, surrendering their targets to their intended victim. Players may use any methods to discover who their targets are, including lying about their identities, referring to their doppelgangers as themselves, or asking friends ("mercenaries") to go off and kill in their name. Mercenaires may not actually collect winnings except that which the paid entrant who "hired" them agrees to pay.

There is no actual combat in this game, and physical contact should result in no more than a pretend dagger thrust, slittling of the throat, or offering a drink to one's target and claiming that it is "poisoned" in order to get the kill. Players are immune while on the fighting field, while heralding, or while in the feast area. The winner will be announced Sunday morning and will receive the total cash entry pot for the contest. An Tir Dearg is not taking a cut. Only paid entrants may collect the cash prize.

New! Single Weapon Tournament:
Shortly after warm up games have begun and it is determined that as many fighters as are going to show up are on the field, the first tournament of the day will be held whereby all fighters gear up in any armor and one, single weapon of their choice - no shields - and test their strength and cunning to survive a cutthroat Battle Royale against all other contenders on the field. Once the dust settles over the corpses of the slain, the lone survivor will be awarded a unique belt flag and steel sword. In case of a simul, the last two fighters will resurrect and go at it again.

New! Gladiator Tournament:
Just before lunch, one of the games we'll be playing will be two man teams bound to each other by holding a length of rope between them in their hands. One partner holds a shield, the other partner holds a sword. Once "Lay on!" is called, teams seek to kill their enemies and be the last team (or individual) standing. If your teammate is killed you may pick up the gear that they were carrying. If you become separated by dropping the rope, both of you die. We'll do this several times to get the hang of it before announcing a final "tournament" match where the winner(s) will receive a unique belt flag and a rudis sword.

New! Robin Hood Archery Tournament:
During the lunch break, entrants will test their skills to see who are the better men (manly men!). Rules to follow. Winner will receive a unique belt flag and golden arrow prize

Annual Four Horseman Tournament:
The tournament will be conducted on Saturday at roughly 4 PM when most field fighting is traditionlly finished, to give us enough time before feast. Each round will have two heralds and will be a "best of three" format. Fights will simply be called "clean" or "unclean", with unclean matches being refought. Any weapon set, and armor may be used. Any "home" team will not be elligible for a "bye" if the bracket requires use of one.

Entrants will provide their four member team at Troll and will be randomly drawn for assignment on a traditional sport tournament bracket. ATD is proud to anounce the continuation of Apocalypse-themed belt flags as prizes for the winners.

Annual Best Garbed Unit Contest:
ATD is also proud to announce the continuation of the Best Garbed Unit Contest. Throughout the event, Realm Council members wil be examining the garb of all attendees, and will collectively vote upon which unit is dressed the best on the field (any and all styles count). There are many considerations which will be taken into account and a full reckoning will be given when the winner is announced. Winners will be promoted to the head of the feast line.

New! Cake vs. Pie:
ATD has been striving to recognize non-combatants at its practices in order to garner greater participation and let those dear to us who keep the fighters going know just how much we appreciate what they do. In order to further develop the non-combat arts and skills of Belegarth, a play on the festive way of choosing teams based on dessert preference has led to a new contest taking place during feast at WoR! Anyone may choose to bring with them a homemade cake or pie and submit it for all to enjoy. An unscientific taste test poll will be conducted and the winner will receive a decorated apron in recognition of their mastery of the culinary arts.

New...ish! Bardic Competition:
Continuing along with the intent of ATD to encourage the non-combat arts, we wish to further grow the excellent contest Gamhain started at Yestare a couple years ago, and as such have been inspired to host our own Bardic Competition (with no intention of stealing his thunder!). Entrants will regale the audience around main fire after feast through song, poetry, story/joke telling, musical/dance performance, acrobatics/juggling, or other period-style forms of entertainment. Bawdy humor is appreciated, but must be tasteful. The winner, as determined by a simple crowd applause check at the end of all performances, will receive an Oak brand penny whistle in "D".

New! Brew Master Competition:
Any and all home brewers, be they accomplished or aspiring, are encouraged to bring samples (at least dixie cup size, which will be provided) of their greatest creations for the Over-21 crowd after feast. Rating cards will be handed out to those imbibing with scores of 1-5 (low to high) being issued in categories of color/clarity/appearance, aroma/nose/bouquet, palate/flavor, mouth feel, and overall impression. 25 points is the maximum, highest score wins, with ties being re-tasted and re-judged. The winner will receive a bottle of wine and a glass goblet. You may or may not be able to gain extra points by getting me drunk.

At first glance it really is! But the single weapon one is just a FFA battle in the early morning where everyone is involved and the winner gets a quick prize. Perhaps a tournament isn't an appropriate name.

The gladiator match will be fights that we're all doing and then a final one where the last team standing gets a prize. The archery one is going to take place during lunch so field fighting won't be affected. The last, real, tournament is after main field fighting is done.

I want to make it clear that the purpose of the day will be large field battles because I believe that's what events are for. We'll be doing lines, capture the flag, unit and realm battles, etc. The 4 Horsemen and the archery one are the only ones that will be time consuming, and are accordingly taking place when the entrants will not be missed from large fights. Think of these other games with prizes as highlights that will be quick and not interfere with that plan - sort of a rare spawn that pops up in an MMO and you have the opportunity to get something neat from it while continuing your main goals.

Hey, I would like to attend but need clarifcation on a couple things, is this archery tourney foam or target? are camp trailers allowed? dogs?

Good questions!

I will get the specifics from my archers, but I'm 99% confident that the archery tournament will either be against life-sized targets of people painted on bed sheets or pillows hanging from ropes. Awarded points increase based on distance or vitality of the target (head vs arm, etc). Equal number of shots per contestant and use your own bow (probably own arrows too.....). There is no separate fee - if you pay troll and have/borrow gear then you are eligible to participate.

Trailers are allowed on site, please make yourselves comfortable.

I will inquire about dogs, but I'm leaning in that direction. I would allow them, but it isn't my land so I have to check. I'll get back to you shortly.

Confirmed, dogs and trailers are A-OK so bring your warm rides and your furry friends for good fighting, good food, and good friends in February!

Speaking of good food I completely forgot to post about feast.

Several factors have worked in our favor this year, and the members who volunteered to shoulder many responsibilities for WoR IV have arranged for this year's feast to be freshly grilled-on-site steaks (your choice of how bloody), potatoes, salad, rolls, and punch.

Additionally, each fighter will receive a complementary bottle of water and a fruit during Saturday's combat.

As an extra ammenity, and because drinking around the camp fire always makes this fat kid hungry, we'll be cooking up hot dogs Friday night for $1 each, all you can eat until we run out. If we have any left on Saturday we'll get that going to take the edge off around lunch time, but don't put all your eggs in that basket.

What is the weather like at this time of year. I am moving out soon and I would have no idea how to pack for camping in Utah in February. But, I am still considering coming out.

Weather in all of winter, really, down here in southern Utah is highs of mid-low 60s and lows in the 30s-40s. Dress for the fall and and bring a nice warm sleeping bag and you should be fine.

It is hit or miss with rain, and snow is less common, but if its going to come, this is the time of year for it. Our first event was overcast, cold, and ended in rain while our second event was overcast, cold and ended in snow. Last year, however, was gorgeous with the sun shining all day.

We look forward to the possibility of having you join our shindig. I'd love to learn some things from you. Good luck with your move!

Pre Registration:

Make sure to include your real name and fighting name, as well as how many people you're paying for. A phone number would also be convenient so I can call and let you know that we've received your money, but I can also hit you up on the Bel Boards with your fighter name. All prereg payments must be postmarked no later than Saturday, February 9th, 2013.

That's my personal mailing info, and I will send you a PM on the boards with a confirmation when monies are received. If anyone wants a phone call confirmation I'll be more than happy to do that as well so long as a phone number is provided.

I'll clarify that the bundle of fire wood is for families or groups of four people. If we get a lot of individual pre-reg payments and they insist on not camping together, then we'll divide up the free firewood equally amongst made-up groups of four.

We've been in contact w/ Sir Sasquatch as of late and it's great that the Cedar City realm and cross-gaming is coming back to life. We look forward to all of you coming down!

First year was 50, second year was 77, last year was 45 because it was only a day event. Geddon: War of Reckoning

This year is camping and we're expecting around 75 as well.

We had some impromptu media come out last year because we surprised the crap out of all the locals who normally use our practice field (city park) on Saturdays - our practice being Wednesday nights. I was never able to find the article, so I'm not sure if they created one or not, which wouldn't necessarily surprise me because they had covered us just six months prior.

But if by media you mean photos, yes we have lots.

Loptr wasn't happy with our first year's signage because it was on poster boards and we had lots of rain. Then when we had to move sites last minute, things weren't clear. I have since made the joke "Loptr approved signage" every year to assuage his fears.

To address your situation specifically, firstly let me thank you for bringing down lots of folks. We appreciate it greatly. Secondly, free firewood is a perk for those who pre-reg only.

To make it easy on us, we figured one bundle of firewood per car (roughly 4 people) of pre-reging attendees since they'd most likely be camping together. It looks like we'll be getting lots of ones and twos who are pre-reging, so we will be gifting smaller amounts of firewood to individuals in an amount equal to their portion of the four person-bundle - it just isn't cost effective to give out a whole bundle of fire wood to a single person. We cover our costs when multiple people do it, so we want to encourage as many folks to send their Troll in early.

Ex: If you have 10 people coming and you all pre-reg, then when you show up your group will get 2.5 bundles to divide up however you see fit. If, of your ten, only six pre-reg, then you'll get 1.5 bundles. If only one of you does then that person will get a quarter bundle. Not much, to be sure, but we'd still like to reward those (in addition to Troll discount and feast line position) who send us funds ahead of time to make things run more smoothly.

After fighting, we'll be tearing down the castle towers (pallets) and that wood will be free for all.

I'm aware, I was with him that first year, was just **** with ya!

I'm sure you've got the signs down this year. Especially since there is little to no chance of it being moved this year.

We will most likely all be pre-registering. Thanks for the info Tiberius.

See y'all then! Excited.

As a show of good will towards our brethren of Dagorhir, in the spirit of reconciliation, An Tir Dearg will honor weapons built to Dagorhir Manual of Arms specs without modification during weapon check.

It is our hope that you'll still want to lighten those horrible javelins though :P

Continuing along with the intent of ATD to encourage the non-combat arts, we wish to further grow the excellent contest Gamhain started at Yestare a couple years ago, and as such have been inspired to host our own Bardic Competition (with no intention of stealing his thunder!).

Glad to see that the Bardic arts are gaining popularity!

I will certainly be there, and you had best be * sure I'm going to compete.

I will also - hopefully- have the bulk of Clan Germania in tow. WIll there be room for us to set up period-tents and our wall?

And will "Best Camp" be taken into consideration toward "Best Garbed Unit"?

Slainte,
Gamhain

You will have plenty of room, and we heartily welcome period camping!

Yes, your camp area will be considered as part of your unit's garb. It will not count against anyone to do modern camping...Sounds like an idea for next year's prizes.

We look forward to hosting you, and hearing your songs.

Tiberius - It's been my experience that it's best to have the sign-up for Bardic Competition at Troll, and only entrants who sign up are allowed.

Otherwise you wind up with 20 people who don't really have a performance, and it takes forever.

Just a suggestion.

1 month out

Take note of that last sentence if you plan on preregistering.

See you all soon!

trying to either find a ride or get people to carpool with us, (hopefully a ride as our driver will not be staying for the event and will have to make 2 trips down and 2 more home), but we should be going. We all have the time off and are getting our garb and equipment in order :) I can't wait to see all you crazy kids again and get my * handed to me :D

Thread cleaned up a bit, edited and condensed first 4 posts to include all the necessary information.

Please give everything a once-over to ensure you are familiar with all our details and fun and exciting things at the War of Reckoning. New information has been added to the map and our tentative schedule will be finalized just as soon as our Realm website is back up from maintenance.

Thanks.

Things just keep getting better and better in ATD and we are passing it along to you!

  • For feast's entertainment, the Bawhammi belly dance troupe will again perform to music, including fire dancing!
  • For your armor needs, we will also have our first official vendor on site: Rose & Thorn Leather out of Salt Lake City. Anyone else wishing to set up a booth in our vendor alley should shoot me a PM here, our Realm website, or on the event facebook page. Selling things privately is perfectly acceptable as well - and encouraged! - but we have the space if you want to dedicate some resources to a booth.
  • Part of our deal with the Rose & Thorn folks is that they will be donating a Bel-legal pair of bracers or greaves which we will raffle off. Anyone paying Troll will receive a ticket as part of their entrance fee. Winner will be announced Sunday morning. Must be present to win. No extra tickets will be sold.
  • We also have two (real) swords that are going to be raffled off as well. (Pics are pending) Tickets for these will be sold for $1 apiece, or 3 for $2 at Troll. Winner will be announced Sunday morning. Must be present to win.

Also, this Saturday (2/9) is the last day to have your pre-reg monies postmarked! Don't forget if you'd like $5 off troll cost, some free firewood, and advancement in feast line!

Pre-reg monies have started coming in. PM's on FB and phone calls have been made to those I have received so far.

Please make sure to bring your own chairs if you'd like to eat in the feasting area and meet folks rather than just at your own camp fire. We'll have banquet tables set up, but chairs are just something we don't have.

Also, paper plates and plastic utensils will not be provided for feast because the meal is steak and those things won't hold up to it successfully. Therefore, make sure to have feast gear of your own that will get the job done.

Updated info, ATD will also provide a separate feast for any children attending that are below fighting age, and thus are not paying Troll.

It's news to me, but my Realm event coordinator wants to do it. No extra cost to anyone, and the meal will be hotdogs and juice boxes.

Please shoot me a PM with a tally of children under 16 that you are bringing to the event and would like to eat the kids' feast.
