How to become a Marshall

Postby bethybee71 » Mon Feb 25, 2013 11:38 pm

I was a Marshall in the SCA for 2 years, we are still in the SCA, but also am starting to play here as well (because we do LOVE to LARP!) what do I need to do to become a marshall?

Go the the bow of war (found under the "rules" section of the main page) read it, understand it, and get a yellow taby.

Same as SCA, you should find the most experienced marshal that you can and shadow them after familiarizing yourself with the Book of War. You should do some fighting as well, and become comfortable with the rules as a combatant. Experience is the greatest teacher.

And ask any specific questions you have here.

The next time you go to an event, ask the head marshal for permission to marshal, and explain your level of experience. Most events it is hard to find enough people to marshal, so they will be glad for the extra set of eyes, even if you are just learning what to watch for.

I don't know that we're really much of a LARP but I guess you get whatever you put into it.
Hope you have fun!
Hopefully having come from a different game with little to no previous experience will give you an objective stance on the rules.

While I'm sure you have ample fighting experience overall, actually fighting using Belegarth's rules with other Belegarth fighters is critical to being a passable marshal. Even people who have been fighting for a couple seasons have a hard time marshalling when it comes to calling hits on people who may be missing them, so there's no amount of fighting you can do that will be too much.

I'll confess that even after 12 years of fighting, I still feel uncomfortable calling shots as a herald. Like anything else, practicing being a herald is necessary for becoming good at that task.
