Not when you take into consideration all the time and effort it goes into making something like that. First, you gotta buy the hide, which can run you anywhere between $80 and $120 depending on where you buy it and if you have a business discount. Then you have to make sure you have all the hardware (which costs as well). Then it's a matter of patterning it, cutting it all out, making it pretty (putting that edging line on it, if you want), dying it, letting the dye dry, fitting it and assembling it. A piece like that could take a week or more to make (depending on if the leatherworker has another job or not). And remember, the more detail you want in something, the more work they have to do. More work = higher price.
And really, the armory you found that armor at does this for a living. Like, that's all they do is make armor. They make it in bulk, which allows for them to charge less than a lot of their competitors. Wolfgaard Amories, for example, doesn't even have a comparable curiass, and their cheapest one is $350 (and they are a full time armory as well). Sable Manticore isn't yet at full tilt (Baker still has a 9-5), but our prices are comparable (if not on average lower) than Schmitthenner.
