Arrows, by the rules, must be exceptionally soft so as not to cause injury or harm when striking a legal target area, which may include the neck and head. Because of this requirement, arrows often strike quite mildly, and in the heat of combat this may make their hits difficult or impossible to notice.
To prevent unnecessary confusion and keep the flow of play going, it is necessary and acceptable to allow archers to call where their arrows strike, mitigating the across-the-field arguments about where or if an arrow struck. This use of the rule is more often than not used only in cases where clarification is needed, rather than archers calling every shot, but their ability to do so aids playability.
